LYNNE REGAINS ANGUS TITLE AT PANMURE BARRY

Lynne Fotheringham from Grange Golf Club, Monifieth won the Angus women’s county golf championship for the second time in three years on a horrendously windy day for the semi-finals and final at Panmure Barry today (Sunday).
Lynne, playing in her third final in four years, previously won the championship at Arbroath in 2004.
In a very closely fought final, Fotheringham beat Carnoustie’s Fiona Gilbert by 2 and 1 in a wind so strong that it made a difference of four or five clubs playing into it.
Lynne had earlier won her semi-final by 6 and 5 over the leading qualifier for the match-play stages, Heather Anderson from Downfield. Fiona edged out Scottish veterans’ champion Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose) by 2 and 1.
Fotheringham had the upperhand in the first half of the final but let things slip a little by three-putting the short 11th were Fiona was able to square the match.
The turning point came at the par-5 14th when, after a 300yd-plus drive, Fiona took four from the4 edge of the green, giving a one-hole advantage back to Lynne.
After halving in pars at the 16th, Lynnt took the 17t5h for the match with a great up and down from 10 yards short of the green.
In the handicap match-play final, 13-year-old Ailsa Summers from Panmure Barry, playing off 18, triumphed over 14-handicapper Mary Faulkner (Royal Montrose) by 5 and 4.
