Scottish Golf Union Press Release

SCOTTISH SENIORS EMBARK ON
TITLE QUEST AT DRUMPELLIER

The Scottish Seniors Open Amateur Championship gets underway on Tuesday at Drumpellier Golf Course in Coatbridge. It is the first counting event in the inaugural SGU Seniors Order of Merit.
Boasting a strong line-up, including the usual contingent of international entries from Europe and the US vying for the seniors national crown, the draw includes a number of familiar names associated with the championship’s 29-year history.
Among the title hopefuls is current champion Stephen Ellis, whose victory at Ranfurly Castle last year marked the biggest win of his golfing career, and he will be hoping that history repeats itself as he embarks on his title defence.
Past champion from 2005, Gordon MacDonald will also be looking to clinch the event double, but this year will be unable to match fellow rival Ian Hutcheon’s record of winning the seniors crown two years in succession, after Hutcheon reigned victorious at Glasgow Gailes (03) and Alyth (04).
Another big name in the championship and one to watch is that of the legendary Charlie Green (Cardross), winner of the event no fewer than five times and most capped Scottish international. The 1962 Open silver medalist and five times Walker Cup competitor must be one of the most seasoned and successful players in the field.
Alongside Green is fellow cap Brian Grieve, a member of last year’s victorious seniors Home International team, who will also hope to challenge the title on the par 71 parkland course.
The seniors championship, hosted for the first time at Drumpellier, attracted more than 176 entries (from competitors aged 55 or over) with the one of the lowest ballots in the history of the event set at 5.2, and looks set to be one of the most hotly contested titles.
Wednesday's end-of-play cut after 36 holes will reduce the field to the top 40 players and ties for Thursday's third and final round.
