Scottish Golf Union Press Release
FOUR BOYS HEAD FOR SKANDIA JUNIOR OPEN
Scottish Boys Champion Paul Ferrier is among the team of four selected to represent Scotland at the forthcoming Skandia Junior Open in Sweden later this month.
Fellow Boys finalist William Bremner (Edzell) joins the Baberton ace along with Dumbarton’s Andrew Campbell and Paul Shields (Kirkhill).
The four Scottish standard bearers were selected based on their current form and good performances at the Boys Championship, the first SGU major of the season held last month at Dunbar. Commenting on the team selection, SGU National Junior Coach Spencer Henderson said, “All of the boys have earned their place in the team and this event boasts a strong international field and will give them valuable experience playing at a higher level.”
For Andrew Campbell, selection to the Skandia Open marks a return to national representation, having last competed for Scotland two years ago at the McGregor Trophy. Campbell made it to the semi finals of the Scottish Boys Championship, but was ousted from the tournament by the current Baberton Boys Champion, Ferrier – who went on to secure the first national title of his career.
Edzell player Bremner, current Angus Boys Champion who heads for a US based golf scholarship later this summer, has proven his pedigree as a worthy compatriot, whilst sole national squad member within the team Paul Shields completes the quartet. Shields will hope to build on his early season success after securing the first SGU Junior Tour event of the year, hosted at Kingsbarns.
In preparation for the championship, which represents their first competitive outing as a team, the group recently benefited from a SGU training weekend held in St Andrews earlier this month. The training camp gave them the chance to train and play alongside U18 national squad members as well as provide the four players with a useful team building opportunity. The young players were also joined by US Amateur Champion Richie Ramsay and recently turned professional George Murray, who gave the group advice on tournament preparation.
With much sought after places up for grabs in the European Boys Championship and Home International teams later this season, the players will hope that strong performances at this event will prove their appetite for overseas action and place them in contention to represent their country again.
The Junior Open will also provide similar course conditions to the European Boys Championship held in Denmark this year, which the Scots will hope to master during the 54 hole tournament.
The Skandia Junior Open takes place from 25 – 27 May and is hosted at Falkenbergs Golf Club, near Gothenberg. The Scots will hope to be among the leading 48 players and ties to make the cut after the first two rounds, to go on to contest the final round.
