JOHN LAURIE WINS THRILLING FINALE TO GLASGOW GOLF
UNION MATCH-PLAY

Cowglen’s John Laurie, pictured right receiving the trophy from president Gus Lamond, played 40 holes over the semi-finals and final before winning the Glasgow Golf Union’s match-play championship for the first time at Cawder Golf Club.
In the semi-final, Laurie won at the 20th against Cawder favourite Neil Macrae in an exciting game which could have gone either way.
The other last-four tie also went to the 20th before Matthew Dargie of the host club beat defending champion Graeme Gorrie (Glasgow) who had been three down with four holes to play.
In the Laurie v Dargie final, John held the upper hand on the outward half but his younger opponent came storming home in 32 shots to be square after 18 holes. Both men were round in 70.
Matthew’s rally ended with a pulled approach at the second extra hole, the ball slipping agonisingly out of bounds, thus handing the title to the more experienced John Laurie.
John is now looking to make it a double later in the summer when the Glasgow Golf Union stroke-play championship is played at his home club, Cowglen, on Sunday, July 22. This event will also be the Glasgow qualifier for the Scottish club championship, the final of which takes place at Glenbervie on September 30.
In the Glasgow Golf Union spring meeting, Graeme Gorrie and Neil Macrae tied on 139 in summer-like conditions. Neil’s second-round 67 was the best of the day and won him the competition on a card comparison with Graeme.
Gorrie was the automatic top seed as the title-holder, which meant that Macrae was the No 2 seed.
