STANDARD LIFE LEVEN GOLD MEDAL
YATES IS SURPRISE HALFWAY LEADER BY FIVE
Hilton Park’s Gordon Yates is the surprise halfway leader with 36 holes to go in the Standard Life Leven Gold Medal on Sunday. Gordon has most of the big names in Scottish amateur golf trailing behind him after rounds of 64 and 73 for a five-under-par tally of 137.
He leads by four shots from a group of five – defending champion George Murray (Earlsferry Thistle), West of Scotland Open title-winner Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan), Tennant Cup winner John Gallagher (Swanson), Gavin Dear (Murrayshall) and Iain Colquhoun (Ranfurly Castle).
New Scottish champion Kevin McAlpine (Alyth) had to pull up his socks to beat the halfway cut on 11-over 153 after an opening round of eight-over 79. He made it with nothing to spare, shooting a 74 second time round for 153.
