SCOTLAND BOYS TEAM NAMED

SQUAD OF SIX FOR EUROPEAN BOYS' TEAM

CHAMPIONSHIP IN SWEDEN NEXT MONTH

Scottish boys' match-play champion James White (Lundin) heads the squad of six selected to represent  Scotland in the European boys' team championship, to be played in Sweden from July 11 to 15.

Scotland last won this title six years ago when David Inglis (Glencorse) was a member of the team.

White, son of a former Tartan Tour pro who himself reached the final of the Scottish boys' championship, is having a great season. Last weekend he earned a silver medal at the Scottish youths' stroke-play championship at Mortonhall. In April he won the Scottish boys' match-play title at West Kilbride.

James also leads the SGU Junior Tour standings and he guided Fife to victory in the Glenvargill Peugeot Scottish boys' area team championship.

The 17-year-old helped tee off this season with an international victory for Scotland in a boys' quadrangular international..

Cameron Gray (West Kilbride), Lewis Kirton (Newmachar), James Byrne (Banchory) and Ross Kellet (Colville Park) also keep their place from that winning team.

Lewis Kirton (Newmachar) was runner-up in the 2004 Scottish boys' stroke-play championship, while17 year old James Byrne (Banchory) reached the semi-finals of this year’s Scottish boys' championship.

Ross Kellet (Colville Park) has made his mark on the men’s circuit, picking up bronze medals in the Scottish stroke-play and Scottish youths' stroke-play, and finishing third in West of Scotland Open championship.

Michael Stewart is drafted into the team for the European Boys Team Championships after impressing selectors in the SGU Junior Tour this year. The 16 year old youngster from Troon Welbeck has won two of the Junior Tour events this season and currently holds the third position in the Scottish Junior Golf Ranking table.

Boys Team Captain Barrie Douglas is confident that the team selected will have a successful week. He said: “All the boys in the side are playing well and they have great determination and team spirit. Much of this is down to the enthusiasm and professionalism of their coach Spencer Henderson.

“They enjoyed a wonderful win together earlier in the year at the Boys Quadrangular and it has given them the taste of team success. They are keen to emulate that victory by doing well in Sweden.”

A total of 24 teams will line up for the five-day championship, which will be played at Bokskogens Golf Club, Sweden. The event will consist of two phases – 36 holes of stroke play qualifying over the first two days, followed by three days of match play within two flights, the top flight consisting of eight teams.

Scotland boys' team is:

:

James Byrne (Banchory)

Cameron Gray (West Kilbride)

Ross Kellet (Colville Park)

Lewis Kirton (Newmachar)

Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck)
