Great fightback from 2-0 down to England in quarter-finals
FRASER'S 19th HOLE WIN TAKES SCOTS
THRO TO EURO SENIOR SEMI-FINALS
One-time
shinty star John Fraser was the Scotland hero in a 3-2 win over England
in the European senior men's amateur team golf championship at Pravets
Golf Club, Bulgaria.
The
Scots, sixth of the eight top flight qualifiers to England's No 3
position, were not expected to win and they trailed 2-0 after Bob
Stewart and Lindsey Blair lost the foursomes 3 and 2 to Ian Attoe and
Mark stones, followed by a 3 and 1 defeat for Ian Brotherston at the
hands of Stephen East in the first singles tie.
But the Bravehearts came roaring back to win the last three singles for victory.
Malcolm
Reid, outstanding for Scotland in the two stroke play qualifying
rounds, maintained his excellent form with a 3 and 1 win over Richard
Partridge.
Then David Gardner levelled the contest at 2-2 with a 2 and 1 win over David Niven.
And
so the outcome rested on the last singles in which John Fraser (pictured) was
playing Alan Mew. Fraser kept his nerve in a tight finish, winning at
the 19th to send the Scots through to a semi-final meeting with Italy,
3.5-1.5 winners over Spain.
The
other semi-final will feature hot title favourites Ireland, 3.5-1.5
winners over Switzerland, against France, winners by a similar margin
over Sweden.
