Scottish senor amateur match-play championship at Stirling

MacDonald v Fraser and  Townsley v

Chancellor in semi-finals

By GORDON THOMSON

After an excellent day’s play at Stirling, tomorrow morning’s four semi-finalists in the Scottish senior amateur match-play championship are Gordon MacDonald (Glenbervie),  who will play John Fraser (Royal Burgess) and Muir Townsley (Dumfries and County) who will face Laurie Chancellor (Inverness).
This ensures that there will be a new name on the trophy.

As the oldest qualifier at 67, Gordon MacDonald’s progress has been remarkable and showed that he is still a match for anyone in senior golf.
Having required 25 holes to win his first round match yesterday he economised with 23 holes this morning to beat Lindsay Blair (Grangemouth), before beating Tom McLevy (Blairgowrie ) in the afternoon by 3 and 2.

John Fraser beat the highly fancied Graham Bell (Downfield) in the morning and then beat Angus Lamond (Glasgow), who had squeezed through on the last green against  senior international captain, David Gardner (Broomieknowe) in the morning.

Muir Townsley (Dumfries & County) had two good wins, easing through against Ian Gillan (Bishopbriggs) at the 19th  in the morning before beating Henry Anderson (Glenbervie) in the afternoon.

Laurie Chancellor (Inverness), who qualified in third place, continued his excellent form with good wins over Ian Angus (Duff House Royal) and George Crawford (Williamwood).
SUPER SENIORS
The Super Seniors event produced two very good semi-finals. In the first match, Jim Kinloch (Cardross) came back from two down with four holes to play to pip Ian Dickson (Lundin ) on the last green at which he holed chip shot.
In the second match, David Millar (St Andrews New), who lost in last year’s final, signalled his intention to go one better as he held off Alan Harrington (Western Gailes) in a very tight game.
