Scottish senior amateur match-play championship at Stirling

Gardner KOs Brotherston on last green in 

battle between former champions

The perfect weather conditions were matched by the high quality golf on show as the Scottish senior amateurs' match-play championship got down to the sudden-death stages at Stirling Golf Club today.

The tie of the round was the clash of two former champions, David Gardner (Broomieknowe) and Ian Brotherston (Dumfries and County) in which the Lothians man prevailed on the last green after a close contest.

In an epic struggle Gordon MacDonald overcame last year’s beaten finalist, Stewart Millar (Cochrane Castle) at the 25th hole, having been two down with four to play. 

The leading qualifiers, Joe McManus (Uphall), Robin Craw (Glenbervie) and Laurie Chancellor (Inverness), pictured, advanced to the next round but only after tough tests.
Bob Stewart (Tulliallan) was beaten by George Crawford (Williamwood).

Graham Bell (Downfield) was in commanding form as he beat Alister Raphael ( St Andrews ) but many of the matches were very tight with John Fraser (Royal Burgess) also being taken to extra holes.

The Super Seniors event saw four very good matches. John Broadfoot (Turnberry), who led the qualifiers in this competition, was beaten by Jim Kinloch (Cardross) and second placed, Tom Sirel (Largs) was beaten by last year’s runner-up, David Millar (St Andrews  New).
