HUTCH NOT HIMSELF AS HE BOGEYS
LAST FIVE HOLES AT ELGIN
Title-holder Ian Hutcheon made an uncharacteristically sloppy start to his defence of the Scottish senior men’s open amateur stroke-play golf champion at Elgin Golf Club today.
The Monifieth maestro, bidding to be national over-55s champion for a fourth time, will start the second round of the 54-hole tournament in 30th place.
Hutcheon’s lacklustre seven-over-par 76 leaves him six shots behind the first-round leader, Ian Mason from Royal Cinque Ports in Kent.
“Hutch” dropped three shots before the turn, a double bogey 6 at the eight and a bogey at the ninth.
His only birdie of the round at the 13th did not lift him at all. In fact, Hutcheon bogeyed each of the last five holes for halves of 37 and 39.
Mind you, that was one better than another former champion, Gordon MacDonald (Callander), the livewire behind the Scottish over-55s circuit. MacDonald’s only highlight was a birdie at the long fifth in halves of 38 and 39 for a 77.
It just wasn’t a day for past title-winners. Stephen Ellis, now playing out of the Heritage Golfing Society of St Andrews), struggled round in 12-over-par 81.
Heading the Scottish challenge, one off the pace, are David Bunker (Nairn Dunbar) and Edinburgh’s Ian Taylor (Royal Burgess).
