HARRINGTON IS NAMED IRELAND'S
SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR
Open champion Padraig Harrington has been named the Sportsperson of the Year in Ireland at the RTÉ Sports Awards.
The 36 year old – who beat Sergio Garcia in a four-hole play-off at Carnoustie to win the Claret Jug in July – was presented with the award live on stage by last year’s winner, Kilkenny hurler Henry Shefflin.
Harrington’s victory saw him become the first Irish golfer in 60 years to win the Open Championship. Among the audience to see him pick up the accolade was Des Smyth, who was Ian Woosnam’s vice-captain in the Ryder Cup match at The K Club in 2006.
