MAIN AND BISSET JOINT WINNERS ON 76
IN NE ALLIANCE AT NEWMACHAR

Two one-handicappers, Billy Main of Murcar Links) and Fergus Bisset (Banchory), were joint scratch winners of the North-east Alliance meeting at Newmachar Golf Club.
Although bright enough overhead, the very wet underfoot conditions over the Hawkshill course contributed to the abnormally high scoring by the field of 93, of whom 28 had No Returns. Preferred lies did not help.
Main, first off the tee at 8am and round in three hours, posted the clubhouse target of four-over-par 76 with three birdies and two double bogeys in an inward half of two-over 38.
Only one man was able to match Main’s score, Golf Monthly writer Fergus Bisset who struggled to the turn in five-over 41 but birdied the 10th, 11th and 12th on his way to a one-under 35 for the second nine.
There were quite a few “if only" stories at the finish, particularly among the four players who tied for third place, one off shot off the lead on 77.
George Paterson (Northern) finished double bogey-bogey (6-5) and Turriff club pro James Mooney did not have a single birdie on his card while fellow pro Colin Nelson (MacKenzie Club) had a double bogey 6 at the 12th and David Corkey (Murcar Links) hit two balls into the water in running up a triple bogey 7 at the 10th.
Newburgh professional Ian Bratton might have been a contender but for a wrist injury which forced him to retire during the round.
Paul Lawrie's older brother Stephen, who plays out of Portlethen, had the leading Class 2 net score for the second week in a row - a net 76 off nine of a handicap.
