ENGLAND BEAT SCOTLAND 9-6 TO
TAKE THE HOME INTERNATIONALS

Scotland’s two-year reign as men’s home amateur international champions is over. They lost the title decider against England 9-6 at Co Louth Golf Club, Ireland today.
And Ireland pipped the Scots for second place by beating Wales 10-5. That gave them a 24-21 "For and Against" compared with Scotland's 21 1/2-23 1/2, both teams having finished with one win, one draw and one defeat on their record.
The Scots never recovered on the final day from winning only one of the morning foursomes from England – James Byrne and Kevin McAlpine beating Walker Cup man Daniel Willett (who lost all six ties over the three days) and Matthew Baldwin by two holes.
Trailing by 3 ½-1 ½ going into the singles, Scotland did well in the top singles ties.
Scott Hendry, Wallace Booth and Glen Campbell wiped out the morning deficit with victories but that was the high point of the day for Scotland.
Byrne, Callum Macaulay, Paul O’Hara, John Gallagher and McAlpine all lost their singles ties. Gavin Dear was the only Scottish victor from games 4 to 10. Jonathan King got a halved match.
The MVP of the tournament was Irish champion Shane Lowry with 5 1/2pt out of six. He was closely followed by England’s Ben Evans and Dale Whitnell who had 5pt each.
Scotland’s top men were Wallace Booth and Scott Henry on the 4pt mark, followed by James Byrne on 3 ½.
Scottish champion John Gallagher did not have a good series. He won only once in five outings. Keir McNicoll injured a hand/wrist in the closing stages of the first day singles against Ireland and was unable to play against either Ireland or England.
Ireland beat Wales 10-5 in the other closing match.
