Ronnie Clark wins three-way play-off to claim Scottish senior men's open title

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Erskine's Ronnie Clark, one of Scotland's most successful senior amateur golfers, added another trophy to his collection today at Irvine Bogside Golf Club where he won a three-way play-off at the conclusion of the Scottish senior men's open championship
Clark, pictured left by Stephen Ellis,  had scores of 75, 73 and 73 for a five-over-par total of 221 which was matched by two Englishmen: A E Atkinson (Windermere) (78-72-71) and Richard Partridge (Wildernesse) (75-71-75).

Clark said:

“To finally win a major championship is really special. I’ve been close in the past so it’s truly great to have made it this year to win my first national title. I played well across the first two days, but just couldn’t putt for some reason. I tried not to look at the scoreboard during play as I wasn’t sure how well I was going but when I heard my playing partners egging me on towards the end, I knew I must be in contention.

“I’ve had an amazing time playing this week and always enjoy playing in this competition. It’s really competitive but is always played in such a great spirit. You really get a sense of the camaraderie here.”
should have won the title within the regulation distance of 54 holes but he bogeyed the 13th, 15th, 17th and 18th of his final round for 37 home.

Patridge bogeyed four holes in an outward 40 but birdied the 15th and 18th for 35 home to get into the play-off while Atkinson also birdied the 18th to hit the 221 mark.
Anglo-Scot Malcolm Reid, two shots ahead of Clark after posting opening rounds of 76 and 70, went off the boil with a closing round of 79 which dropped him to a joint 10th place finish.
Ian Brotherston (Dumfries and Co), who was also in the mix after scores of 70 and 77, dropped out of the hunt with an 80 for 227.
