Stuart McLaren, 22-year-old Bruntsfield Links member and leader of the Lothians Order of Merit, shares the first-round lead with home course player Gordon Murray on the three-under-par 69 mark at Newmachar Golf Club.
McLaren posted his sub-70 score early in the tournament which is sponsored by the Kings Links Golf Centre, first round at Newmachar Golf Club today.
"I scrambled well," said McLaren after returning a three-under-par 69  in windy, overcast conditions which threatened to rain before the end of the day.
The Newmachar Hawkshill course is already very wet after a lot of rain late in the week.
"I scrambled on the outward half but played better on my inward half with a few putts dropping," said the Lothians man.
McLaren had six birdies - at the par-5 second, fifth, par-5 eighth. 12th, par-5 16th and 18th - in halves of 35 (one under par) and 34 (two under). He also bogeyed the seventh, ninth and 15th.
Playing partner Ferghus Milne (Banchory) posted a 71 to be two shots off the early lead. He was actually ahead of McLaren with an eagle 3 at the eighth helping to cover his first nine holes in 33 to McLaren's 39.
A double bogey 6 at the 12th knocked Milne back.
Munro came in near the end of the first round to join McLaren in the lead on 69. Gordon had a bogey-free round, studded with birdies at the seventh and two par-5 holes, the eighth and 16th for halves of 34-35.
Jordan Shaw (Boat of Garten) moved into third place with a 70 (36-34). He bogeyed the first but birdied the fifth. short 15th and 18th.
The field will be cut to the leading 40 players and ties for Sunday's final two rounds.
Euan McIntosh (Turnhouse), recent winner of the Leven Gold Medal, was a late withdrawal with a recurrence of an old arm injury. McIntosh, 48 and a reinstated amateur after 20 years in Germany as a club pro, won the Scottish Golf Order of Merit last year and gained a Scotland cap in the 2016 Men's Home Internationals.
