Craigmillar Park Open this coming
weekend can be stairway to pro career
NEWS RELEASE
The 2017 Craigmillar Park Open takes
place at the Edinburgh venue on Saturday and Sunday, April 15 and 16. The 72-hole stroke-play competition was first staged in 1961 and it
is the annual opening event of the Scottish Order of Merit season, qualifying
for world amateur ranking points.
It is regularly attended by the leading amateur golfers in
Scotland, Ireland and from
across the border.
The event's first
winner in 1961 was Ronnie Shade who went on to win it on another four
occasions.
Past
winners have included golfing legends and talented young guns. Names you will
recognise are Sir Nick Faldo, Charlie Green, Andrew Oldcorn, Craig Watson, Marc
Warren and Scott Jameson.
This
year’s entries see an increase on previous years with a strong field of 78
amateur golfers and a reserve list of 25.
Craig Howie of Peebles has the lowest
handicap in the field playing off +4.8 and Craig triumphed at this event in
2013.
Another Craig who won the event is
Craig Watson who won in 1995 and then again in 2014.
Craig Watson went on to win the
British Amateur at Royal St. Georges, Sandwich, Kent in 1997 beating Trevor Immelman in the final round
by 3 and 2.
Craig commented
following his win in Kent
"I played the Sandwich final oblivious to the fringe
benefits but I got to play in the Open at Troon, the Masters and also the
Walker Cup at Quaker Ridge near New York”
Craig played in the
1998 Masters and was joined by a young Matt Kuchar who had won the US Amateur.
When Craig arrived in
Augusta that year the weather was unusually cold and in the BBC coverage Craig
was interviewed by Dougie Donnelly.
Craig said in the
interview that if “he wanted to play in cold and windy conditions he could have
just entered the Craigmillar Park Open” putting the competition on the map.
Craig Watson is now
Captain of the Walker Cup GB and Ireland team who play the USA in Los Angeles
in September. The team is likely to be announced on August and
Craig will be keeping an eye on some of the potential team members who will be
performing on the Craigmillar Park Golf Course over the weekend.
