Brad Dalke, Curtis Luck all square after 18 holes of U.S. Amateur final

Brad Dalke and Curtis Luck are all square after 18 holes of the 2016 U.S. Amateur final.

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Michigan – Brad Dalke was supposed to throw out the first pitch at the Detroit Tigers game Saturday night at Comerica Park. However, a rain delay pushed back the start of the game, and Dalke decided to head back to his residence for the week, but not before he got to tour the ballpark and meet some Tigers players, including Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera.
Ah, the perks of being a U.S. Amateur semifinalist.
Of course, the perks of being a U.S. Amateur champion are even better (a British Open invite and a handful of likely PGA Tour exemptions adding onto Masters and U.S. Open invitations), and that’s what Dalke and Curtis Luck are playing for Sunday at Oakland Hills Country Club. Through 18 holes of their championship match, the score is how they started, all square.
Luck, a 20-year-old Australian who won the Western Australian Open, a pro event, in May, got out to the early lead by winning the par-4 opening hole with an up-and-down par. He dropped Nos. 3 and 5 with bogeys, but each time got a hole back. He stretched his lead to 2 up with par at the par-4 11th after Dalke couldn’t get up-and-down from behind the green.
A day earlier, Dalke, a 19-year-old sophomore at Oklahoma, birdied the par-3 13th to switch the momentum in his semifinal match against Jonah Texeira. On Sunday, he made a very difficult two-putt par to cut Luck’s lead in half. Two holes later, Dalke squared the match back up with par at the par-4 15th.
A birdie from 6 feet on the par-4 16th, where Dalke had closed out his last two matches, gave Dalke his first lead. But Luck made a tough two-putt for par on the par-4 18th hole to knot the match back up at the break.

Great Scott! Brown aces same hole in

consecutive years at US Tour event

GOLF CHANNEL.COM

Greensboro, North Carolina – No, Scott Brown’s performance on the par-3 third hole today at the Wyndham Championship was not an instant replay.
Brown made a hole-in-one on the 163-yard hole during the final round, exactly one year after he pulled off the same feat during the final round of last year’s event.
One big difference? This time his playing partner was Boo Weekley, while last year he was playing alongside Tiger Woods.
“There were about 25,000 fewer people there to see it than last year,” Brown said. “Boo said that’s the first time he ever put a 1 on the card, too. Same thing Tiger said to me last year. I don’t know.”

Brown becomes the first player in tournament history to record multiple aces, and the feat was even more impressive, considering changing conditions led him to pick a different club than last year.
“Last year opposite wind, one club less. Today it was a 7-iron and it was pretty much identical,” Brown said.
“It landed pretty much in the identical spot, like a foot short of the hole and I guess, I can’t see it from down there, but I’m guessing it just hopped in.”
According to Golf Channel’s research department, the only other player to ace the same hole at the same course in consecutive years is Joe Ozaki, who did it at Bermuda Dunes Country Club in 1997-98.
The shot helped Brown to a final-round 65, his best score of the week at Sedgefield Country Club. He finished the tournament at 9-under 271.

Cameron leads Scots in Germany with a par 72

Ellon's Ross Cameron, sponsored by Saltire Energy, made a solid start with a par 72 to be lying joint 14th at the end of the first round of the German PGA Development Tour's Preis des Hardenberg at Hardenberg Golf Club, Northeim in Germany.
Cameron was not fazed by a double bogey 7 at the par-5 11th. He also had two bogeys but birdies at the second, fifth, ninth and 15th cancelled out the mistakes to leave him four shots off the pace being set by two Germans and a Frenchman.
Daniel Kay (Dunbar) is tied 20th with a 73, one shot ahead of Portlethen's Sam Kiloh (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) who is joint 29th.
Kevin Duncan had a 75 to be T41 and former Scottish amateur champion Alexander Culverwell (Dunbar) is joint 62nd after a 77.

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Jeff Wright of Forres, lying 20th in the Scottish Golf Order of Merit, will move up the points table after an impressive, four-stroke win in the North of Scotland open amateur stroke-play championship for the David Blair Trophy.
Inverness GC president Gordon Fyfe presents Jeff with the trophy pictured right.

Wright had rounds of 68, 64, 72 and 66 for a six-under-par total of 270 at the par-69 Inverness Golf Club lay-out.
Calum Fyfe (Cawder) came storming through on the final round with the tournament's lowest score of six-under 63 for a 274 total.
Third was Jamie Stewart (Old Ranfurly), the only Scot in the GB and I boys' team for the upcoming Jacques Leglise Trophy match against the Continent of Europe at Prince's, Kent.
Inverness teenager Cameron Fraser led the first round with a 64 before Wright took over at halfway.
Then Leven Gold Medal winner Kyle Godsman (Moray) moved into the pole position with scores of 67, 69 and 67 but he fell away to closing 75 and dropped down tied fifth on 278.
Wright reached the turn in 31 in his last round with birdies at the first, third, seventh and ninth. He dropped his only shot at the 12th before parring in from there for 35 home.
Fyfe's 63 was made up of halves of 33 and 30. The Cawder man birdied the third, fifth, seventh, 10th, 12th, 14th and 17th. He had one bogey, at the ninth.

Scottish Senior Open at Archerfield report and scores link

Raffery fades and Eales from Essex steps in

to score first win in 22 years

FROM THE EUROPEAN SENIOR TOUR WEBSITE
Paul Eales from Epping, Essex claimed his first victory in 22 years as he secured a maiden European Senior Tour title at the Prostate Cancer UK Scottish Senior Open at Archerfield Links, East Lothian.

Eales, pictured right by courtesy of Getty Images(c),  trailed the overnight leader, former European Tour Number One Ronan Rafferty, by seven shots, starting the day on seven under par.
He moved to eight under par with a birdie on the second hole, but bogeyed the par three eighth hole to make the turn level par on the day.
A run of consecutive birdies on the 10th, 11th and 12th holes saw him shoot up the leaderboard, and he held his nerve on the 18th hole with a birdie putt from ten feet to take a one-shot lead with two groups left to finish their rounds, carding a final round four under par 68.
The 53 year old becomes the seventh player to win on the Challenge Tour, European Tour and European Senior Tour, adding to his victories in the 1991 Audi Open and 1994 Extremadura Open.
“That is the special thing, knowing that I’d won on the Challenge Tour on the way up, on the European Tour and now here,” said Eales. “It’s extremely special and I know I’ve now joined a small band of brothers who have won on all three Tours.
“It’s special to come to Archerfield, one of my favourite places on the planet. To win a title in Scotland, the home of golf, is a privilege.”
The Englishman admitted he was unaware of his position on the leaderboard after his run of birdies, as he then found himself alongside Peter Fowler, Santiago Luna and Rafferty.
“I didn’t make many mistakes until the eighth when I missed a little tap-in, but Sharon (his wife/caddie) encouraged me on the tenth tee and that became a bit of a springboard,” he said.
“It wasn’t until I made it to the 14th green when you could see that the other guys were coming back. I knew I was in amongst it then.
“I putted on 17 and saw I was tied for the lead, so I thought ‘let’s see what happens down 18’. I pulled my shot to the green a little bit in the wind but it was just a question of picking my putting line and rolling it down; it went centre-cut and was brilliant.”
Eales reserved special praise for his wife Sharon, who caddies for him on the Senior Tour, crediting her for her part in a memorable weekend on the D J Russell-designed Fidra course.
“Without her I wouldn’t have been here,” he said. “Most players will tell you on Tour there are a lot of scars and she’s encouraged me, nursing the wounds along the way and we have had a blast here.
“It’s very special, and to get some of the congratulations from my peers and fellow players was also special.”
Australian Fowler carded a final round 67 to share second place with Spaniard Luna, who shot 74.
Fowler’s compatriot Mike Harwood finished two shots behind Eales, nine under par, and former European Ryder Cup Captain Mike James shared fifth place with Rafferty and Gary Wolstenholme.
Rafferty faded with a final round of 78 after leading with scores of
63 and 67.

 American left-hander Peterson scores first

European Tour victory in Czech Masters

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Paul Peterson won his first European Tour event as he held off the challenge of defending champion Thomas Pieters to claim the title at the D+D REAL Czech Masters in Prague today.
The American came into the final round two shots behind Pieters but followed up his course record 64 on Saturday with a 67 to get to 15 under and beat Pieters by a single shot and win the 166,660 euros first prize.
Peterson was playing in just his 23rd European Tour event and becomes the 11th first-time winner this season and just the seventh left-hander to win in Tour history.
"This is the best feeling in the world," he said. "My team and I have put in so much hard work and long hours by everybody and I'm just so happy.
"We had this as a goal this year and to be able to accomplish it means so much.

"It was fantastic, the crowds have been great all week. My sports psychologist was on the bag this week and my coach and my girlfriend came all the way from Phoenix. It's just so great to have all the team here."

Pieters climbed off a 6000-mile flight from Rio de Janeiro after finishing fourth in the Olympic Men's Golf Competition, knowing that back-to-back wins here and at the Made in Denmark could still earn him an automatic qualifying place for the Ryder Cup in September.
That chance has now gone but the Belgian can still be very pleased with his defence after he claimed his maiden win here in Prague 12 months ago.

Englishman Matthew Fitzpatrick has nailed down the ninth and final automatic spot for Europe in the Ryder Cup.
The 21-year-old former US Amateur champion from Sheffield, with a closing 69 for a 10-under-par total,  finished fifth in the Czech Masters, giving him enough points for an insurmountable lead when European qualifying ends in Denmark next week, to earn his debut in the prestigious competition Fellow Englishmen David Howell and Ryan Evans finished one shot ahead of him after rounds of 68.
Both the leading duo had a birdie and a bogey in their first two holes but a Peterson gain on the third cut the gap to one and he played a stunning approach on the fifth to within a foot to share the lead.
He then took advantage of the par five ninth for the third day in a row to move to 13 under and take a one-shot lead at the turn.
A dropped shot after finding a greenside bunker on the 11th dropped Peterson back into a share with both the leaders taking advantage of the par five next.
Pieters lipped out from five feet on the 14th and left a birdie effort agonisingly short on the next, with Peterson making him pay when he put his tee-shot to two feet on the par three 16th and moved ahead with two to play.
Pieters threw down the gauntlet with an approach to three feet on the last but Peterson rolled in from 17 feet to seal the title with a birdie.
"I didn't really watch him hit a shot today, to be honest," added Peterson. "I know he's a long hitter and I play a little bit more precision golf. I was just trying to frustrate him because I knew I would be hitting in first a lot so i just stuck to my process all day and was able to hit some fantastic shots under the pump."
Evans was bogey-free in his closing 68 while Howell had four birdies and two bogeys before an eagle on the 12th catapulted him up the leaderboard.
Fitzpatrick made gains on the first, fourth, ninth and 12th to get within a shot of the lead but a three-putt bogey on the 15th ended his chances.
American David Lipsky was then at nine under after a 70, a shot clear of English trio Gary Boyd, Robert Rock and Graeme Storm, and Swede Robert Karlsson.

Dalke v Aussie Luck in US Amateur Final

Bloomfield Township, Michigan — Brad Dalke found himself in unfamiliar territory on Saturday during his U.S. Amateur semi-final showdown with Jonah Texeira: He was actually trailing in a match at Oakland Hills Country Club, something that had only happened for three of the first 71 holes he had played in match play.
Two down after nine holes, the University of Oklahoma sophomore didn’t let the moment or what was on the line—a spot in the 36-hole championship match along with invites to the Masters and U.S. Open—overwhelm him.
“I knew I just needed to keep grinding,” Dalke said. “You just never know what happens in match play. And obviously this is kind of a big hump in the U.S. Amateur, making it to the finals, just because of all the stuff that you get along with it. I mean, I think it’s in everybody’s head, no matter how hard you try to push it out of your head. So I knew that he was probably thinking the same thing.”
Sure enough, Dalke’s steady mindset helped him mount a comeback. Winning the 10th and 11th holes with pars, he quickly squared the match, then won Nos. 13, 14 and 15 to seize control before putting Texeira away, 3 and 2.
“He started making some putts for birdie, and I started kind of [not getting] up-and-down for par,” said Texeira, a rising junior at USC. “He beat me fair and square.”
Asked about the spoils of victory, Dalke, who celebrated his 19th birthday on Friday, said the opportunities that await were just settling in. He has played Augusta National once before, invited with his father by a member in December 2014, when Brad was only 17. But being able a participant in the Masters is something different altogether.
“Honestly, I didn’t envision myself there, not this early [in my career],” Dalke said. “I knew I had the game to do it, but it’s a long road at the U.S. Amateur and you never know what could happen. Now that I’ll be there, it will be the week of my life.
There is still more to play for in Michigan, however. A victory over his opponent, Australia’s Curtis Luck, in Sunday’s championship match would bring with it an exemption into next year’s Open Championship. For Dalke, it also would lock up a spot on the three-man USA squad that will compete at the World Amateur Team Championship in Mexico next month.
“I’m confident in myself,” said Dalke, who planned to celebrate his semifinal win by attending the Tigers-Red Sox baseball game on Saturday night in nearby Detroit. “I think my game right now, I can beat anybody in the world. I’m excited for it, and I’ve just got to go out there and play well and execute, and we’ll see where that takes me.”

Luke Donald five shots off the pace at Wyndham Championship

Luke Donald is keen to play in another Ryder Cup
Luke Donald is keen to play in another Ryder Cup
Luke Donald hopes to make a point to Europe's Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke after moving up to third place after three rounds of the Wyndham Championship on the US PGA Tour.
Donald is hoping to become one of Clarke's three captain's picks for the event at Hazeltine next month although even a win at Sedgefield Country Club will not help him become an automatic qualifier.
But the Englishman hopes to contend on Sunday and show Clarke his form is returning, even though he trails 54-hole leader Si Woo Kim by five shots.
Donald, who had a hole-in-one during Thursday's first round, made six birdies on Saturday in a six-under 64 to stay in touch with the Korean youngster.
He birdied the fourth and fifth holes in reaching the turn in 33 but made a move on the back nine where further shots were picked up at 10, 12, 14 and 16, the latter having been the venue of his ace.
"I need to win probably tomorrow and probably need to have a good chance to win The Barclays to have a chance," said the former world No 1, whose current ranking is 90.
"It's been a slow season for me. It hasn't been consistent but I've been working extremely hard and it's nice to see some form coming into play."
Even then, Donald's 13 under total is distant of the lead as Kim matched his round of 64 a day after going so close to a 59.
Kim had seven birdies in his Saturday effort with his only dropped shot of the day coming at the fourth.
His lead is four shots going into the final 18 holes with the closest challenge coming from another European - Spain's Rafa Cabrera-Bello.
Cabrera-Bello could have been a couple of shots closer to the lead but for a costly double bogey at the seventh, although he did follow that by birdieing three of the next four holes.
Donald shares a tie for third place with Jim Furyk and Kevin Na, who both shot 67 in their third round.
And Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell is just about in range for a Sunday charge as he sits one more shot back after a round of 64.
