ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates –– The European Tour is hoping to cut rounds by 15 minutes with a new slow-play policy designed to stop players from impersonating snails on the golf course.
European Tour chief executive Keith Pelley pledged last year to address the ongoing problem, and he has acted quickly to put a new strategy in place to get players to move faster. The new pace-of-play policy goes into effect this week.
“Our aspirational goal is to cut 15 minutes off a round on a daily basis,” Pelley said. “We feel that is significant."
The Tour has introduced a two-pronged monitoring and timing policy to force players to speed up.
In a release to all players, the Tour announced: “A monitoring penalty will have the same status as a bad time except it will not count towards any golfing penalty.
"A player having either two monitoring penalties or bad times, or a combination, will be fined €2,600, rising by €2,600 for each successive monitoring penalty or bad time.”
Previously, the Tour would inform a group it was out of position, and then leave it alone, expecting the pace to speed up. The new policy means officials will stay with the group to see who is holding play up.
“We will now be with the players rather than informing them that they are out of position and leaving them to do it by themselves,” said European Tour chief referee John Paramor.
“We found that had mixed success. We feel we are going to have to stay with the players so we will be able to see every shot played from the moment we identify that they are out of position so we can see who the problem is. They are the ones who will get these monitoring penalties which can end up being costly.”
Pelley hinted that this is only the first step to get European Tour members to play faster.
“I think it’s a positive first step," Pelley said. "We will continue to work closely with our players, closely with the R and A in other ways of making our game quicker which is then more appealing to consumers, broadcasters, stakeholders and fans. If we think we have to take more measures we shall.”

Jamie Donaldson hopes to play Singapore

 Open after chainsaw injury

Jamie Donaldson has been forced to pull out of the Abu Dhabi Championship after having an accident involving a chainsaw

Jamie Donaldson has been forced to pull out of the Abu Dhabi Championship after having an accident involving a chainsaw
Ryder Cup star Donaldson hopes to play in next week's Singapore Open after escaping serious injury following a mishap with a chainsaw while gardening at home.
Welshman Donaldson, who secured the winning point as Europe defeated the United States at Gleneagles in 2014, posted a graphic photo of the damage to the little finger of his left hand sustained while gardening.
Above the image on Twitter, the 40-year-old wrote: "So folks in my time off decided to have a fight with a chainsaw and lost! Oops!! C u in Dubai."

However, Donaldson's manager John Fay said the Welshman had not suffered any tendon damage and confirmed that he would be able to feature on the Asian Tour next week.
"Jamie has full movement in the finger and is expected to make a full recovery," he said. "He is very relieved and will be a lot more careful in the future."

Donaldson, who claimed his first victory in more than a year in the Thailand Golf Championship in December, had been due to play in this week's Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, a tournament he won in 2013.
He later added on Twitter that he was "making progress" after having the stitches in his finger removed and posted another picture with the caption: "Looking a lot better, swinging a club fully...no balls hit yet!"

He is not the first golfer to have suffered an accident with a chainsaw, with former World No 1 Greg Norman suffering nerve damage to his left hand while cutting wood in September 2014.
Asked in Abu Dhabi if he owned a chainsaw, Donaldson's Ryder Cup team-mate Henrik Stenson joked: "Why? Do you have some trees you want me to cut? It didn't start last time I tried, so it's probably a good thing.

"I used to chop wood when I was a youngster. I had a couple of close calls with the axe as well. It's good fun to do something different and you feel like you're strong, lumbjeracking.
"But it can be dangerous and we've had a couple of my colleagues find that out."

Back problem ends Jonathan Thomson’s

Australian   adventure

FROM ENGLANDGOLF
A back problem has forced England’s Jonathan Thomson to abandon a tour of Australia - just days after finishing runner-up in the first event.
“I’m very disappointed and gutted,” said the 19-year-old from Lindrick, who was second in the Australian Master of the Amateurs Championship at Royal Melbourne.
“I think it's the long flight that has triggered the problem, being 6ft 9in tall and having to fly 26 hours is never a great combination.”
But he went on: “It's a long season and I need to get myself right for the big year ahead. I'm home now and getting myself fixed which is 100% the main priority.”
Thomson was playing in Australia as part of a four-man England Golf squad, alongside Adam Chapman (Windermere), Bradley Moore (Kedleston Park) and Ashton Turner (Kenwick).
The three others will go on to play in the Lake Macquarie Amateur and the New South Wales Amateur before returning in early February.

Almost unplayable conditions for North-east Alliance fixture

John Duff and Brian Nicolson tie for

Newburgh victory with rounds of 67

Joel Hopwood reporting
Professional John Duff (Newmachar) and Hazlehead amateur Brian Nicolson tied for first place at today's North-east Alliance fixture at Newburgh. In almost unplayable conditions, they and 69 others, battled the icy paths - slippy tees and rock-hard playing surfaces to score matching two-over-par 67s, great scores under the circumstances.
Duff had birdies at the eighth, 10th and 18th with bogeys at the third, sixth, ninth, 12th and 17th in halves of 34 (two over) and 33 (level par).
Nicolson birdied the first, 10th and 16th but bogeys at the fourth, seventh, 11th, 14th and especially the 18th, cost him victory after halves of 33 (one over) and 34 (one over).
It was Duff's second win of the Alliance season but a first for Nicolson.
They finished two shots ahead of third-placed Greg McBain (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) who had a double bogey 6 at the first hole in halves of 37 and 32
Laura Murray (PLGC), who had a triple bogey 7 at the first hole,  and Keil Beveridge (Kippie Lodge) finished joint fourth on 71.
Full scorecards for the top 5 can be found beneath the scoreboard.

CLASS 1
Today's Class 1 winner was Deeside's Alan Gall, who shot a superb 72 - 5 for 67. His nett score was a single shot ahead of Aboyne's David Nelson, David Mackay (Mackenzie Club) and Gordon Milne (Newburgh). Jim Morris of Craibstone completed the Class 1 top five.

CLASS 2
Nigel Parker (Murcar Links) shot a hugely impressive 76 - 15 = 61! He beat R Brown (Newburgh) by one shot, who must have thought he would seal the top prize! Banchory's Jim Murray was third with a nett 63 and both Peter Walker (Cruden Bay) and Michael Rendall (Stonehaven) were one shot further back with nett 64s.

Law shares lead, Cameron in third place after

two rounds of Red Sea Egyptian Classic

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Aberdeen's David Law regained a share of the lead on a good second day for the seven Scottish competitors, all of whom made the cut at the end of the second round in the Red Sea Egyptian Classic at Sokhna Golf Club.
Law is on three-under-par 141 after rounds of 70 and 71. Joint leader is Frenchman Antoine Schwartzel (73-68).
The Paul Lawrie Golf Centre player was two over par after 10 holes but then birdied the 11th, long 17th and 18th for a 71.
Ellon's Ross Cameron (Saltire Energy) is in third place, only a shot behind the leaders after rounds of 72-70 for 142. He birdied the short ninth, 11th, 12th and 14th.
Dunbar's Alexander Culverwell, the former Scottish amateur champion who is making his pro debut, is in tied 10th position with rounds of 72 and 74 for 146. Bogeys at the 15th and 18th in an inward 39 saw him lose touch with the leaders.
Grantown's Duncan Stewart (Turnhouse) is tied 12th on 147 with scores of 76-71, which included a birdie at the short 16th and an eagle 3 at the long 17th.
Former Scottish amateur champion Chris Robb (Meldrum House) is tied 29th on 150 (78-72) while the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre pair of Sam Kiloh (78-73) and Philip McLean (78-73) made the 151 cut on the limit mark.
Kiloh had six birdies in all, four of them in a row from the 11th to the 14th.

European Tour to allow players to wear

 shorts in practice and pro-ams

Players will be allowed to wear shorts in practice rounds and pro-ams after the European Tour's tournament committee unanimously voted in favour of the proposal.
Chief executive Keith Pelley approved a request from European captain Darren Clarke to allow his team to wear shorts in the oppressive heat and humidity ahead of last week's EurAsia Cup in Kuala Lumpur.
Clarke and Lee Westwood also wore shorts in practice ahead of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Tuesday, before the issue was debated that evening by the committee.
Ian Poulter, who was also part of the victorious EurAsia Cup team, wrote on Twitter: "It's 2016 not 1990. Get rid of the stuffy old rules that hold golf back. Make it more fun (for) everyone."
Tournament officials will consult with local promoters to ensure players wearing shorts will not cause offence and if there are any objections, shorts will not be allowed that week.
Matt Fitzpatrick and Danny Willett both ditched the trousers in practice prior to the EurAsia Cup

Players cannot wear shorts during tournament play, but Rory McIlroy is among those open to a change in the rules.
"Why not? It really depends if guys are comfortable or not," McIlroy said. "I don't think it takes anything away from the tradition of the game or etiquette or how guys look on the course."
Caddies can currently wear shorts on the US PGA Tour but not players, which is something world No 1 Jordan Spieth would like to see change.
"It will be something that I would love to see on the US PGA Tour, as well," Spieth said. "Guys seem to all love it over here and I've not heard one person complain about it."

Greg Norman
Greg Norman

Greg Norman's stint as lead analyst for Fox Sport's coverage of the US Open proved short-lived. The Shark has been removed by the network just one year into Fox's 12-year deal with the USGA.
First reported over the weekend, Fox confirmed the news today.
"After careful consideration, we have decided to make this change to our USGA Championships coverage," said John Entz, president of production and executive producer for Fox Sports. "We want to thank Greg for his contributions last year, and wish him success in all his current and future endeavors."
The media release quoted Norman as saying: "I put a lot into my role this past year and really enjoyed the time I spent with the commentary team, I have a long history with FOX and wish them well on their journey showcasing USGA Championships. I also want to thank David Hill (former Head of FOX Sports) and the USGA for believing in me and instilling their vote of confidence in me from the outset."
Norman made his US Open debut, taking up the role filled for CBS by Johnny Miller previously, at Chambers Bay last year.
US golf magazines and websites are tipping that he will be replaced by former US Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger.
Golf.com reported an unnamed source saying that Norman was too silent, and that he "didn’t do his homework and he didn’t know any players who weren’t Australian''.

If it's any consolation, NZ is having its

worst summer that Jim Hardie can remember

FROM JIM HARDIE IN NEW ZEALAND
Hope all is well back home in Scotland after all the dreadful weather.
Greetings from probably the worst New Zealand summer I have ever experienced, simply awful so far !

The wind has made golf virtually unplayable for close on a month; think we have had two days when it only reached around 30 kph, the rest has been semi-hurricane season !
Now, of course, the drought has broken. Christchurch has had four days of rain, and it's pretty chilly at a mere 11 deg some days !!
Have had a few games, of course, with Sir Bob (Charles), and on a pretty nice day we played at a course about 45k outside Christchurch called Terrace Downs. My oh my, it was my first ever visit, and the scenery was simply mind boggling
There is a very short par 3 , 16th hole, where the drop to the right of the green must be about 1500 feet down to the Rakaia River gorge, what a view down to torqoise blue water, simply unbelievable
I blamed the scenery for allowing the great man to wriggle off the hook, as my partner and I were one up with two to play, and yours truly hit my second to about 20 feet, and with just two putts to record a famous, and rare victory,  managed to three-putt, with the inevitable last hole birdie from Sir Bob's partner, Geoff Saunders, squaring the match !😂😂
Anyone coming to Christchurch simply must play at Terrace Downs, what a place, and in superb condition, as is Shirley golf links !
Hopefully summer shall arrive soon, but of course it's still better than the dreadful scenes of destruction up Ballater way, and of course with the oil industry in further turmoil, I guess a bad Kiwi summer will sound quite nice to a lot of folk !
Met up with Ros Roy, and Mike Mather from Ballater, had a few games, and sampled quite a few of the awesome NZ sav blanc wines with them !
They have now departed for Australia,  to quote Mike, to get some heat !
Hoping that your dreadful weather improves, as I am sure it also must Down Under
Regards to all
Jim Hardie

The PGA of Austria’s Georg Schultes continued his excellent form in the Mercedes-Benz International Pro-Am at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting and Golf Club in the United Arab Emirates with a superb second-round 66 (-5) to take the lead heading in to the final round.
Schultes hasn’t finished outside of the top-five in the Pro-Am since the first edition in 2014 and he looks set to continue that remarkable record after his second round that consisted of six birdies and one solitary bogey.  A two-round total of 134 (-8) gives him a four stroke advantage over the rest of the field.
In second place is the PGA of Great Britain and Ireland’s Daniel Whitby-Smith who fired in six birdies on his way to a second round 67 (-4) to move him to a total of 138 (-4) keeping him in touch of the lead.

Overnight leader, Jonathan Stacey (PGA of GB and I), dropped a couple of shots in Round 02 moving into a share of third place with 2015 Defending Champion and fellow countryman, Garry Houston, who matched his first round score of 70 (-1) to sit six shots off the pace.
In the Team Pro-Am Tournament, Rockliffe Hall Golf and Spa Hotel’s Assistant Professional, Jonny Dye, and his team extended their lead at the top to four points after an equally impressive second round score of 85 Points (-13); a two round total of 176 points (-32).

Jonathan Stacey and his team remained close after a solid second round of 83 points (-11) moved them to 172 points (-28) for their two rounds where they are joined by Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting and Golf Club Professional, Enda Maguire, and the PGA of GB and I’s Darren Bragg, whose team carded the best score of the day with 90 points (-18) for a share of second place.

With the top six teams being separated by just six points it is going to be extremely competitive closing round to determine who takes the top spot.

Special mention must also go to Martin McFlynn who made an exceptional hole-in-one with a five-iron from 172m on the 17th hole.

£50,000 AAM Scottish Open Qualifier to be

hosted by Moray GC at Lossiemouth links

PGA NEWS RELEASE
Following the huge success of the inaugural event in East Lothian last year, another exciting Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open Qualifier is on the cards in the Highlands this summer, with Moray Golf Club in Lossiemouth taking over hosting duties on July 2-3.

The 36-hole event will carry a prize fund of approximately £50,000 and will offer five places in the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, which takes place at Castle Stuart Golf Links from July 7-10.
The event, which is staged in association with Visit Scotland, The European Tour and the PGA, was introduced to offer more Scottish players the chance to play in their national Open.
The first chapter at North Berwick produced a golfing fairytale, as local amateur Calum Hill claimed one of the places on offer in the main event at nearby Gullane as he raised his game to finish in the top five.
"The inaugural Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open qualifier was a great success last year and we are looking forward to building on that when the event is held this year at Moray Golf Club," said PGA in Scotland secretary Shona Malcolm.
"We are fortunate to be staging the event once again at one of Scotland's top links courses and will continue to do so."
Martin Gilbert, Chief Executive of Aberdeen Asset Management, added: “Aberdeen are proud to support Scottish golf at all levels of the game, so to continue to provide this opportunity to up and coming golfers is very important to us.
“The Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Castle Stuart itself offers four prized spots at this year’s Open Championship at Royal Troon. What a story it would be if a Scottish player was make it through this qualifying event at the fantastic Moray Golf Club.”
Mike Cantlay, Chairman of VisitScotland, commented: “In Scotland we pride ourselves on the fact that golf is an inclusive sport and one that is open to all. Giving golfers the chance to qualify to play in their national open is a prime example of that as well as giving us an opportunity to showcase Moray Golf Club, yet another wonderful links course in Scotland, the Home of Golf.”
After securing his spot in the event at Gullane, Hill (pictured below) played a practice round with Rickie Fowler, who went on to claim the coveted title.

“It was a great chance,” said Hill. “I learned a lot about myself playing in the qualifier. It was very well run and it was great being on the West Links at North Berwick.
“To qualify for the Scottish Open was an amazing experience. To finish strongly down the stretch in the qualifier was a great feeling, and the Scottish Open itself was something I will never forget.”
Craig Sutherland, who was born in Orkney but is now based in Kent, won the North Berwick event, beating West Linton PGA professional Gareth Wright in a play-off after they had tied on 130 (12-under-par).
The remaining spots were also claimed by two Tartan Tour players - Greig Hutcheon (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) and Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf).
"With some of our top players qualifying along with an English-based Scot and, of course, an amateur, it worked well last year," added Malcolm.
Concurring, PGA Cup player Wright said: "To get to play in the Scottish Open is a fantastic opportunity and, with the tournament now being played on links courses, you are getting most of the top players playing to
get ready for The Open.
"What Aberdeen Asset Management have done with the qualifying event is brilliant in itself as it is a great event with fantastic prize-money.
"For me to have to have secured one of the five spots for Gullane was just great and I am looking forward to this year's event and hope for a repeat of last year's success."
The criteria will be the exactly same as last year, with a field of 144 being made up of exempt PGA players plus others PGA members and assistant professionals that enter, assuming they have Scottish nationality under the PGA’s eligibility requirements or are currently employed at a golf club in Scotland.
A number of amateurs will again be nominated by Scottish Golf while some sponsor's invitations will also be issued.
Moray Golf Club has a long history when it comes to hosting tournaments, having staged a PGA EuroPro Tour event as recently as 2013, when Tartan Tour player Paul McKechnie claimed victory.
