Kyle Godsman wins Leven Gold Medal with four-over-par total in 30mph wind
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Hopeman's Kyle Godsman, a member of Moray Golf Club, Lossiemouth won a Leven Gold Medal tournament marred by winds gusting up to 30mph over the Fife links today (Sunday).
Godsman's damage limitation worked better than that of his rivals.
He was able to put together rounds of 69, 68, 73 and 78 for a four-over-par aggregate of 288.
His last round included a double bogey 7 at the sixth and a triple bogey 7 at the eighth. He also bogeyed the 17th and 18th.
But, despite that, Godsman still won by four strokes from former Scottish amateur champion and a past professional, Barry Hume.
The Haggs Castle man, well behind at the halfway stage on Saturday night, posted Sunday rounds of 75 and 74 for a final total of 292 which hoisted him into the pole position.
Godsman was the only player capable of holding his game together in the awful conditions sufficiently well to beat the long-time clubhouse target.
Even Hume finished with bogeys at the 13th, 14th and 17th in halves of 35 and 39.
Dan Lawrence (Ballumbie Castle), who shot a superb seven-under-par 64 to be the halfway leader, finished with rounds of 79 and 82 - which underlines how testing Sunday's conditions were - for a total of 295 and joint fourth place behind Scottish youths champion Stephen Roger (Cruden Bay) who bogeyed the 14th, 16th and 18th in his closing 74 for 294.
