David Law has sights set on this being

his big breakthrough year

A strong field has assembled for the second event of the 2016 European Challenge Tour season, the Red Sea Egyptian Challenge Presented by Hassan Allam Properties, with Aberdeen's  David Law one of a number of players returning to a happy hunting ground in Sokhna Golf Club.
The 24 year old, twice winner of the Scottish amateur championship, finished a close second in the 2016 Red Sea Ain Sokhna Classic on the Pro Golf Tour in January, where he was pipped to the post by France’s Antoine Schwartz – who is also competing in Egypt this week.
Law, who first joined the Challenge Tour in 2014 after a run of strong performances on the Pro Golf Tour, is at home in the North African desert having previously played on the Egyptian coast five times.
With four top ten finishes on Europe’s top developmental tour under his belt, the Aberdonian, who plays out of the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre, is now aiming to go one step better and claim a maiden win on the Road to Oman.
“Without a doubt I am hoping this will be my breakthrough year,” he said. “The top 15 is the big aim. I am not much of a goal-setter but that is the main one.
“We are all here to win the tournament. I am playing well at the moment but there is going to be a lot of stiff competition just like every other week on the Challenge Tour.
“I have now had two full seasons on the Challenge Tour and it is fantastic to come to a place you know well and somewhere where you have played good golf. Fingers crossed we can have a good season.”
Law, who was Scottish U18 boys champion before his two Scottish amateur triumphs and before joining the paid ranks, will once again lock horns with Schwartz along with three other players who have won recently around Sokhna Golf Club.
Philip Mejow’s win in this tournament last year helped propel him to the top of the Pro Golf Tour Order of Merit for 2015 – and in turn earn Challenge Tour qualification.
This year, Belgium’s Christopher Mivis recorded a three shot victory on the Pro Golf Tour after a memorable seven under par final round of 65 in January, while France’s Franck Daux also won back-to-back tournaments in Ain Sokhna in February on the Alps Tour.
Mark Tullo was victorious the last time the Challenge Tour was in Egypt in 2010, when a then-21 year old Rory McIlroy also memorably teed it up.
The Chilean finished fifth in the Challenge Tour Rankings in 2014 and he is happy to be back in the country where he claimed his second Challenge Tour title six years ago.
“I have good memories and I am so excited to be back in Egypt,” said the 38 year old. “When I won before in Cairo It was a great golf course, the hotel was awesome and we got to see the pyramids for the first time so everything was ten out of ten.
“Now we are back in Egypt six years later and the golf course is great, the hotel is amazing so we will see what happens.
“I haven’t played too much for four or five months so I wouldn’t say I have brought my A game but you never know in this sport.”
Making his professional debut in Egypt this week is Frenchman Romain Langasque, who enjoyed a dream week at the Masters tournament in Augusta earlier this month.

The 2015 British amateur champion will tee off on Wednesday alongside fellow former winners of that prestigious title, Garrick Porteous and Alan Dunbar.
