GOODYEAR, Arizona –
In a new medal/match-play championship format this year for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship, Western New Mexico University men's team came up just short, beaten 3-2, by Colorado Mesa University,  in the first round Monday at the Golf Club of Estrella.
The four winning teams from the first round advanced to play each other later on Monday with the top two teams advancing to Tuesday's championship match. Although the Mustangs are eliminated from winning the RMAC Tournament, they will still play 18 holes Tuesday morning with a chance to still win the overall top score of the tournament.
The team that wins the tournament will get an automatic bid into the NCAA South Central/West Regional that will be hosted by Western New Mexico University May 1-3 at the NMSU Championship Golf Course in Las Cruces. The Mustangs are currently third in the South Central Region, as the top 10 teams from both regions will advance to setup the 20 team regional field.
WNMU is in second overall with a 300, just four-strokes back of UC-Colorado Springs. Senior Calum Hill (Kinross, Scotland/Kinross HS), pictured, continues his career year as the All-American leads on the individual side with a three-under 69, two-ahead of the field.
Senior All-American Thomas Neve (Epsom, England/Cams Hill School/Merrist College) isn't far behind as he also landed in the top-10 tied for seventh with a two-over 74. Junior All-American Harry Wetton (Bedford, England/The Bedford School) is in the top-20 tied for 19th with an opening round 77. Senior Daniel Young (Cheshire, England) fired a first round 80 and is tied for 30th, while sophomore Ross White (Dollar, Scotland/Kinross HS) is tied for 43rd with an 86.

In the match play, WNMU dominated in matches played by Hill and Wetton.
Hill defeated Kyler Smith by nine-strokes, while Wetton rolled to an eight-stroke win against Chris Aiken.
Colorado Mesa came back to take the other three and win the match. Neve was strong in his match against Trevor McKune, but McKune was able to win by two strokes. Billy Ramsey won by three strokes against White and Jack Mavrakis added a slim two-shot win over Young to give the Mavericks the 3-2 win.
