 Liam Johnston lone Scot in Spanish last eight

as Grant Forrest, Connor Syme are beaten

Liam Johnston (Dumfries and County Golf Club), 22nd of the 32 match-play qualifiers, is the only Scot in Saturday morning's quarter-finals of the Spanish amateur golf championship at Seville Golf Club.

Walker Cup player and former Scottish amateur champion Grant Forrest (Craigielaw), the No 28 qualifier, lost by 4 and 3 to Irishman Colm Campbell, the No 5 seed, by 4 and 3 in the first round. Campbell lost in the second round by one hole to Englishman Scott Gregory.
Connor Syme (Drumoig), the 20th qualifier, beat Francisco Rosete Fabos (Spain), the 13th qualifier, by 5 and 3 in the first round but went down by 3 and 1 to Italy's Guido Migliozzi, the No 4 seed, in the afternoon.
Liam Johnston, pictured, beat the  11th seed, Spain's Ivan Cantero Gutierrez, by two holes in the morning and then scored a 3 and 2 win over the No 6 seed,   Mario Galiano Aguilar (Spain),  in the second round.
Johnston, who played on the US college for four years as a student at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, will now play the No 3 seed, France's Romain Langasque for a place in the semi-finals.
