Fraser and Piercy lead at Doral with 66s

ASIAN TOUR NEWS RELEASE
Australian Marcus Fraser continued his formidable form when he fired a six-under-par 66 to share the opening honours with Scott Piercy of the United States at the World Golf Championship (WGC)-Cadillac Championship on Thursday.
Fraser, winner of the inaugural Maybank Championship Malaysia last month, nailed seven birdies against a lone bogey to hold a one-shot edge over American superstar Phil Mickelson, who took third on his own at the Trump National Doral.
Reigning Asian Tour number one Anirban Lahiri of India got off to an encouraging start as he signed for a 70 to stay four shots off the pace in tied-11th place while Korea’s K.T. Kim stayed a further shot back in tied-16th at the US$9.5 million event.
Australian Scott Hend and Thai star Kiradech Aphibarnrat were among those bunched in tied-48th after carding matching 75s while Australian Nathan Holman returned with a disappointing 82 at the WGC-Cadillac Championship.
Fraser, who leads the Asian Tour Order of Merit thanks to his win in Malaysia, credited his hot putter for his strong start and is determined to continue his good form for the next three rounds.
“It’s obviously a great way to start, especially in a golf tournament like this and a golf course as strong as this. I’ve obviously got a lot of confidence from today.
"My previous results at Doral haven’t been that great. Nice to get a good one early and hopefully build on that over the next few days,” said Fraser.
Fraser opened with two straight birdies starting from the 10 and added a birdie on 13 to turn in 33. He birdied the first after the turn and sank three straights birdies from the fifth before stumbling with his lone bogey of the day on eighth.
“I felt like I did everything really well. I played really steady and I putted really well again. The greens is perfect out there. There’s not a mark on them, so if you feel like if you read them well and get the ball started on line, it’s a good chance to go in I felt like everything was pretty good today and felt like it was all around, I did a good job,” added the 37-year-old Australian.
Thai veteran Thongchai Jaidee was forced to withdrew from the WGC-Cadillac Championship due to illness.
