Lingmerth leads as Tiger makes Memorial cut

FROM CBS SPORTS.COM
DUBLIN, Ohio -- David Lingmerth took a step toward turning his game around with a 7-under 65 at the Memorial on Friday. It gave the Swede a one-shot lead going into a weekend that includes Tiger Woods.
But just barely.
Long after Lingmerth capped off a bogey-free round at Muirfield Village, Woods was 40 yards away from the flag on the 18th green and in dire need of getting up-and-down to save par and avoid missing his first cut at the tournament he has won five times.
For his second straight tournament, he holed a key putt to survive.
"At least I was able to make those putts, so that's a positive sign," Woods said after his 2-under 70. "Now I just need to put myself in the position where those putts are to win tournaments, not to make cuts."
He was 11 shots behind Lingmerth, who was at 12-under 132.
Woods had to hang on, making two straight bogeys before his par save on the final hole. For Jason Dufner, it was a thrill a minute.
Dufner made a 5 on a par 3 and a 3 on a par 5. And that was before he made a hole-in-one -- his fourth eagle of the week -- on the par-3 16th hole. He followed that with a bogey. It was relatively boring after that, and the former PGA champion wound up with a 67 that put him in final group with Lingmerth, just one shot behind.
Dufner didn't have much to say -- he rarely does, even when he won the PGA Championship two years ago -- and spoke only to Ohio-based reporters. Until a tie for eighth last week at the AT&T Byron National, he had gone just over a year without a top 10 on American soil. The only time he made news was when his divorce was reported.
"I'm hitting it really good," Dufner said. "I'm having enough good holes, good shots, to offset some of the mistakes I've had."
Ryan Moore, gearing up for a U.S. Open near his home town outside Tacoma, Washington, had another 67 and was at 10-under 134, along with Andy Sullivan of England, who can earn a spot at Chambers Bay with a good week at the Memorial.
A trio of past champions -- Hideki Matsuyama, Jim Furyk and Justin Rose -- were in the group that was three shots behind. Joining them was Patrick Rodgers, who made eight birdies in a round of 66 and is poised to at least secure temporary membership on the PGA Tour.
Good scores were stacked up behind them. There were plenty of birdies available on a course that still presents trouble around every corner.
"Every shot gets your attention," Rose said.
It got the attention of Masters champion Jordan Spieth. He went out in 31 and was creeping up on the lead when he wound up on the wrong side of the 10th green and made double bogey, and he never recovered. Spieth missed a half-dozen putts from 10 feet or in and had to settle for a 70 that put him six shots behind.
Phil Mickelson made a late eagle for a 68 and was in the group at 4-under 140.
Kenny Perry made bogey on his last hole for a 73 and missed the cut by one shot. The 54-year-old took a career money exemption for the year so he could end his career at the Memorial, which he won two times.
Lingmerth had missed four cuts in his last five starts, and the start of this tournament was ominous when he was 2 over through four holes. He made seven birdies on his last 12 holes on Thursday, and he made seven more Friday.
"I started giving myself some opportunities and the putts started dropping in," Lingmerth said.
Dufner was tied for the lead late Thursday until he hit his tee shot into the water on the 18th and made double bogey.
He started Friday on the back nine and was in trouble early when he hit into the water on the par-3 12th and had to make a 4-footer to salvage double bogey. His fortunes changed quickly. He hit a wedge to 5 feet for birdie on the 14th. He hit hybrid into 6 feet for eagle on the 15th. And then he hit 6-iron into the hole on the par-3 16th.
Five under on three holes goes a long way.
"Probably the best I've ever done," Dufner said.
Woods, meanwhile, opened with three birdies in four holes, though he was still wild off the tee. He mixed bogeys with birdies and was in reasonable shape at 3 under for the tournament until he missed the 16th green long and made bogey, and then found a deep patch of rough just off the left side of the fairway at the 17th, had to lay up and could get no closer than 30 feet from 100 yards. That bogey put him on the cut line, and he popped up his 3-wood off the 18th tee into rough.
But he saved his par and saved his weekend.
This is the third straight tournament that Woods made the cut, something he hasn't done in a year. He believes he is making progress, though the bar has been lowered significantly at the moment.

Attoe lives the dream to capture senior crown

Worplesdon’s Ian Attoe lived his dream today when he won the English senior men’s open amateur championship by three shots on his home course.
“It’s what I gave up work for,” said Attoe, who has swapped the life of a golf club secretary to concentrate on senior amateur golf.
“You hope you can win one event in a year and it’s beyond your wildest dreams you will win the English seniors – except you do dream!”
Attoe, who has been a Worplesdon member for 40 years, had the first stirrings of the dream two years ago, when it was announced that Worplesdon and West Hill in Surrey would host this championship.
“I started thinking about it and that it had to be an advantage to play on your own course,” he remembered.
He gave up work in April to start playing senior golf and it all paid off today – after three sleepless nights!
Attoe (image © Leaderboard Photography) started the final round two shots off the lead and finished three clear after scoring one-over 72 for a five-over par total.
The runner-up was Andrew Atkinson (Windermere), who scored 73 today. Sharing third place, a further shot back, were former champion Chris Reynolds (Littlestone) and David Niven (Newbury and Crookham). Meanwhile the low score of the day was provided by Phil Sewell (Castle Royle) who went round in two-under 69 to share 13th place.
The final round was, for the most part, a tight battle between the leading contenders. Tim Whittaker (Beaconsfield) set out with a two shot lead but after five holes had been caught by both Attoe and Atkinson.
After the 10th – a picturesque par three over water – Atkinson and Attoe had moved into a one-shot lead. The next four holes proved telling, for Attoe played them in one under par and built up a three-shot lead.
However, it was anything but plain sailing home. Attoe topped shots on both the par five 15th and short 16th - but rescued himself on both occasions with his superb short game, salvaging respectively a birdie and a bogey.

“I looked at the scoreboard after 14 and saw I had a three-shot lead and tried to play defensively. I had a couple of quick swings, but my putting stood up,” he said.

He was certainly not defensive on the 17th, but fired a long drive into the perfect position to attack the green and narrowly missed a birdie. The 18th provided a final test when his approach rolled through the green, but again he played a lovely little pitch which finished close to the pin.

That finishing flourish was one of the highlights of the round for Attoe, together with his three birdies on par fives, which he credited to the advantage of local knowledge. And he remarked: “I wanted to play well for the members who walked round, I didn’t want to let them down.”
Now, he’s looking forward to Scottish, Welsh and British senior championships.

Lytham Trophy winner Kinhult shares

lead at halfway with fellow Swede

FROM EUROPEAN TOUR WEB SITE
Swedish teenager Marcus Kinhult became only the second amateur in European Tour history to lead at the end of the first two rounds when he took a share of the pole position at the halfway stage of the Nordea Masters.
After carding a five under par 67 at PGA Sweden National on Thursday, Kinhult picked up where he left off on day two, firing five birdies and a bogey in a 68 to finish nine under par and equal the record set by Aaron Pike at the 2007 MasterCard Masters.
Local man Jens Dantorp, who shared the overnight lead with the 18 year old amateur, carded four birdies on his front nine before picking up another shot at the 14th to join Kinhult at the top of the leaderboard in Malmö.
Starting on the back nine, Kinhult birdied the 12th and 17th to reach the turn in 34 before picking up another shot on the par five first.
Kinhult dropped his first shot of the day when he three-putted the sixth, but responded immediately with a birdie from ten feet on the seventh.
He then recovered from finding a bunker on the ninth by producing one of the shots of the day, a superb approach from 190 yards to 15 feet, before calmly rolling in the birdie putt.
The winner of the recent Lytham Trophy, a prestigious amateur event, Kinhult again enjoyed playing in front of big crowds.
“I’m pretty happy with my score and where I am in the tournament,” he said. “Today was more of a solid round from tee to green and I made two big putts, but my putting wasn’t as good as it was yesterday. My game feels good at the moment.
Dantorp enjoyed himself on day two and is looking forward to taking on Kinhult on Saturday.
He said: "It was good fun out there. The crowds and the fan club were so good. It really helps boost me out there. I was feeling a bit tired towards the end of the day, but hearing the crowd cheering gives me new energy.
"The wind picked up after lunch so it was tricky. The back nine was pretty tough and there were some tough holes in the wind. It certainly tires you a bit.
"I had a really good start and that always helps. It helps keep your spirits up, and I was looking at the leaderboards trying to catch Marcus, and I did. I’m looking forward to playing with him tomorrow.
“It will be fun. I’ve never played with Marcus so it’ll be nice to see how he plays and to try to beat him. I’m trying to stay cool and tell myself it’s just another round of golf tomorrow.  The co-leaders are not the only Swedish players fighting at the top of the leaderboard, with Sebastian Soderberg two shots behind them and Alex Noren a further shot back on six under par.
Countryman Henrik Stenson shot a level par 72 to finish two under par after two rounds.
Germany’s Maximilian Kieffer, who looked set to top the leaderboard before carding back-to-back bogeys at the 17th and 18th, is two shots off the lead, while England’s Eddie Pepperell and Tom Lewis are three shots behind the leaders.
SCOTSWATCH: Scott Henry  and Andrew McArthur  are the leading Scots on 140 ( Henry 69-71, McArthur 71-69). They are  lying T13. Stephen Gallcher is T34 on 142 with a pair of 71s for for 142.
The cut fell at 144 and the Scots who failed to make the safety mark were Duncan Stewart on 145 (73-72) and Chris Doak (71-75) and David Drysdale (70-76), both on the 146 mark.

Dogged Docherty only one behind leader Bekker

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Oliver Bekker moved into the halfway lead at the Swiss Challenge, courtesy of a five-under 66, as the South African hopes to follow in the footsteps of his friend and compatriot Jake Roos by making a career breakthrough on the European Challenge Tour.

The 30 year old, making just his third start of the season on Europe’s top developmental tour, moved one shot clear of his playing partner Jack Doherty (pictured right) from Glasgow, thanks to a round which included six birdies - five of them coming at holes which he also birdied on day one en route to an opening 67.
It has been a rock-solid opening two days for the Stellenbosch player on a tricky course which swallows up wayward drives in heavy, unforgiving rough, and it has almost come as a surprise to Bekker, considering he had been struggling from the tee in recent weeks.
Having watched, at close quarters, his friend Roos claim a career-changing victory at the Barclays Kenya Open last year before going on to graduate to The European Tour, Bekker is not short on inspiration in his chase to finish in the top 15 of the Road to Oman.
Doherty, meanwhile, replicated his four under par opening round of 67 to move to eight under par, one shot behind Bekker, and ensure the two will play together for a third successive round - this time in the final group.
First round leader Gary Boyd could not quite build on the momentum of his five under par opening round, despite opening with a birdie at the ninth hole – his first – but a one under par 70 was enough to keep the Englishman in touch with the lead, three shots back on six under alongside compatriot Jack Senior and South African Haydn Porteous.

Fenwick, one off lead, is chasing £10,000 prize

Dunbar's Neil Fenwick is gunning for the biggest prize of his career so far, the £10,000 that goes to the winner of a PGA EuroPro event, at Longhirst Hall, near Morpeth in the north-east of England, writes Colin Farquharson

Fenwick, pictured,  has had a pair of three-under-par 69s for 138 and is one shot behind the leader, Christopher Evans (Wishaw Golf and Country Club, Sutton Coldfield) (69-68).
The ultra-consistent Fenwick has yet to miss a cut this season  His second round didn’t start to plan with a double bogey at the 1st but he recovered courtesy of an eagle at the 6th. A bogey at 7 followed but four birdies on the back nine saw him to a second-consecutive 69.
Connor was denied a share of the lead by a bogey at 17, having recovered after also starting with a double bogey. He broke par at 2, 4, 9 and 11 but also bogeyed the 3rd leaving him to sign for a level- par second round of 72, maintaining his 18-hole tournament score of six under.
Alongside Fenwick, sharing second place, are Welshman Mark Laskey (71-67) and overnight leader Sam Connor (Alsager (66-72).
Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) is still in the mix, sharing fifth place on 140 after rounds of 69 and 71.
Elliot Saltman (Archerfield) is tied 10th with rounds of 73 and 69 for 142.
Other Scots who survived the cut to the leading 50 and ties at 147 and better were Ross Cameron (69 for 145), Fraser McKenna (71-146), Jordan Findlay (73-146), Paul Shields (72-14) and, right on the limit mark, Lloyd Saltman (75-147).
Scots who missed out included Paul Doherty by a single shot on 148 (74-74)

Bob Stewart wins East of Scotland Seniors
Open at Downfield with a 71 for 145

By GORDON THOMSON
With a fine second round of 71 giving him a total of 145, Bob Stewart (Tulliallan) overtook the joint overnight leaders, Paul Moultrie (Royal Troon) and  Nick Robson (Meldrum House),  to win the East of Scotland Seniors Open by one stroke at Downfield Golf Club, Dundee today.

Stewart, pictured by Steve Ellis, who won the Scottish Seniors Championship at Elgin in 2008  and has a great record in SSGS events,  showed that at 64 he is still a major competitive force as he overcame the challenge of the younger brigade.

Moultrie and Robson, both 72-74, finished joint second on 146 with David Logie (Craigiehill), David Shields (Glenearn ),Tony Paterson (Sunningdale) and Murray Ferguson (Stirling) tied for fourth place on 149.

Gareth Wright ties for second after mid-round

slump in PGA professional championship

West Linton's Gareth Wright finished joint second, only one stroke behind winner Paul Hendriksen, in the PGA professional championship today after a disaster-strewn run of five over par for the eight holes between the seventh and 14th in his final round at Burnham and Berrow Golf Club,Somerset, writes Colin Farquharson .
The Welshman, who had birdied the fourth and fifth, had a double bogey 6 at the seventh and bogeys at the ninth, 10th and 14th
Wright got back on track with a birdie at the 16th but came to the last hole, needing a birdie to force a play-off with Hendricksen (72 for four-over-par 288).
He didn't get it but a par 4 for 289 put him level with second-placed Cameron Clark (Moore Hall) and they earned £5,260 each compared with the winner's £10,000 reward.
Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf) and Craig Everett (Caldwell) finished in the top 10. Fox signed off with a 73 for 291 and a T8 finish which earned him £1,800 while Everett finished T10 on 292 with a closing 70 for a £1,250 pay-out.

Forsband and Fowler share lead in Jersey

 Seniors' Open

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNCATIONS
Anders Forsbrand and Peter Fowler are locked at the top of the leaderboard heading into the final day of the Acorn Jersey Open, after the links-loving pair carded matching second rounds of 68 at La Moye Golf Club.
In-form Australian Fowler, who finished tied second in last week’s Wales Senior Open, posted five birdies over the course where he made his debut on both The European Tour in 1983 and European Senior Tour in 2009, but he three-putted the last hole for his only bogey of the day, settling for a six under par total of 138.
That was matched by Swede Forsbrand, the winner of the 2012 Scottish Senior Open over the links of Fairmont St Andrews. He  carded one more birdie than Fowler, but bogeyed the closing hole on both nines in his four under par round of 68.
Fowler has mixed memories of his trips to La Moye, having injured his back at the venue on the eve of his maiden Senior Tour appearance six years ago, which subsequently kept him out of action for a year.
Despite that painful experience, La Moye remains a course of which the 2011 Order of Merit winner is very fond, and he is looking forward to trying to add to his three Senior Tour titles.Like Fowler, Forsbrand is an aficionado of links golf, and he is targeting an improvement on the greens in his final round, as he chases a second Senior Tour win.
“I only missed two greens, but didn’t get too much out of the round,” he said. “It’s tough out there though and hard to hit it close. Anything around par is good here, so I’m happy with the first two rounds.
“It depends on the wind but this course is a bit harder than at Fairmont, where I won, because some of the greens can be tricky. Any wind makes it hard, so you need to move the ball and it requires good golf, but I love links courses.
Forsbrand and Fowler have a two shot cushion from English pair Andrew Sherborne and Mark Davis, who signed for rounds of 68 and 71 respectively, and joint first round leader André Bossert of Switzerland, who posted a level par 72.
Jersey resident Ian Woosnam, the former World Number One and Masters Champion, lost ground with a two over par round of 74, and is now eight shots off the pace in a share of 25th position.

St Andrews Links Trophy

McDonald and Syme sharing second place
behind Stirling student Sharvin

Three Scots in the top 10 - Jack McDonald, Connor Syme and Greig Marchbank - of a very strong field of 144 represented a fairly good start for the host country to the St Andrews Links Trophy which started today with the first of two rounds over the par-72 Jubilee Course.
Stirling student and former Irish amateur champion Connor Sharvin (22) leads the way with an excellent round of 65 but he is only one shot ahead of McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie) and Syme (Drumoig).
 Said Sharvin:
“The putter was really hot over the front nine and the longest putt I had was six foot.

“The back nine was a real grind with my only birdie at 11.

“At the 15th I got a flyer out of the left rough that flew the green However, from practically no shot, I then played a flop shot to 20-feet and holed that, so that kept the momentum going.

“Overall, to shoot a 65 is very pleasing and it’s a great to keep my good run of form going.”
MacDonald (22) has just finished his degree in pure mathematics at Stirling  He was out in 31, 5 under, including a tee shot to within one inch of the flagstick at the 162yd par-3 fifth
Said Jack: "Played really well but the wind picked up on the back nine.......was studying hard all year so couldn't go to South Africa....I think I'll stay amateur for the next year and concentrate on golf......hope to make the six-man Scotland team for the Europeans.

Connor Syme, right in the picture with a 66, is a 19-year-old
based at Drumoig Golf Centre where his father is the owner/professional at the driving range and the currrent Scottish PGA captain
Said Connor: "I played solid and was always in position. I wasn't in the team last year so that is my objective this year. Athough I work for my father at Drumoig, I get to play a lot of golf.
"After going out in 33, got to 6 under with  birdies at 11 and 12.
"Had a great up and down at 13 and then birdied 14 but blocked it off the 15th tee and bogeyed.2

Defending champion Grant Forrest (Craigielaw) had a steady 72 opener but so high is the class of competitor that was good enough to give him only a share of 38th place.
It looks like the halfway cut will be very low on Saturday evening.
The bad news for Scotland was the clutch of high profile players down among the dead men on the three-over 75 mark - Ewen Ferguson (Bearsden), winner of two 72-hole tournaments this season, Walker Cup team candidate Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie), Matthew Clark (Kilmacolm) and Calum Fyfe (Cawder). They are tied for 98th place
