Scots-born Manson leads Swiss Seniors Open

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Fife-born Gordon Manson grabbed the lead on day two of the Swiss Seniors Open after a second successive bogey-free round at Golf Club Bad Ragaz.
The Scot, who has lived and work in Austria for many years, has yet  to win on the European Senior Tour, but is in prime position to break his drought after a round of 64 moved him to the head of affairs on ten under par, two shots clear of Scotland’s Ross Drummond and the English duo of Phil Golding and overnight leader Carl Mason.
Manson arrived at Bag Ragaz buoyed by a runner-up finish behind Australian Peter Fowler in the ISPA HANDA PGA Seniors Championship, and is on course to go one better after notching three birdies on each nine in an immaculate display on another blistering day in the Swiss Alps.
The 55 year old said: “I can’t remember playing two rounds without any bogeys before, so I’m very, very happy. I played really well from tee to green, my long game was very good – and with better putting, there could have been more even more than six birdies.
“I came here with confidence high after the way I played at the PGA Seniors. On the way over, my wife said: “You’re always so happy when you’re driving to Bad Ragaz”. And she’s right. I like this tournament, and I’m looking forward to Sunday. As I said, my confidence is up so hopefully I can finish it off.”
Golding also kept the bogeys off his card in a round of 65 which featured two birdies on the front nine, and another three gains after the turn.
Having tasted success in each of the two seasons since he joined the Senior Tour, Golding knows what it takes to close out a tournament and the 2003 Open de France champion is hoping to apply some pressure to Manson in the early stages of the final round.
He said: “It was almost perfect – but it could always be better! No bogeys is great, and I also missed some good chances for birdie. The greens were more difficult to read today, but hopefully I’ll have more luck on the final day.
“I like the course and the tournament, and the setting here in Bad Ragaz. It’s the perfect place, and the food is the best of the year!”
Drummond has yet to enter the winners’ enclosure in the over-50s ranks, but a round of 67 has the Scot well placed heading into the last day of the €300,000 event.
He said: “My long game was very good today, I hit the ball close to the flag on most holes. I made four birdies, but could have had a lot more. I’m looking forward to tomorrow, when hopefully I can play as well as I did today.”
Mason, who opened with a 63 to stake an early claim for an unprecedented fourth victory in the tournament, had to show all his battling qualities in a round of 69.
The Englishman, whose 25 victories is a Senior Tour record, turned in two over par 37 courtesy of back-to-back bogeys from the eighth hole.
But he raced home in 32 strokes to sign for a round of 69 and an eight under par aggregate total.
