ABOYNE'S BEVERIDGES REACH

FINAL AFTER COMPUTER PAIRING

Aboyne brother and sister Keil and Kimberley Beveridge have reached the final of the North-east Golfers' Alliance scratch foursomes at Craibstone Golf Club - after being paired by a computer in a random draw of all the qualifiers, writes Colin Farquharson.

Keil, 31-year-old teaching professional at Kippie Lodge Sports Club, Milltimber, and 19-year-old Scotland international Kimberley will play Tony Robertson (Peterculter), a former Murcar Links assistant pro reinstated to the amateur ranks, and Craibstone member John Borthwick for the "Evening Express" Shield tomorrow morning (9.20am tee off)
The handicap final for  "The Press and Journal Shield" (9am start) will feature Neish Chisholm (Kemnay) and David Bisset (Banchory) - who were both brought up in the town of Keith and went to school together - against Lenny Duncan (Craibstone) and retired helicopter pilot David Nelson (Aboyne). Duncan and Nelson will receive one stroke, at the 11th.
The Beveridges - Kimberley is a two-handicapper and has played regularly on the NE Alliance circuit all season - won a tight match by one hole against the new Alliance champion, John Duff (Newmachar) and Stewart Allison (Caledonian).
"The key hole was the 16th," said Keil (pictured above). "We were in a water hazard and looked like going one down. But we salvaged a half with a good up and down, then went ahead with a par 4 at the 17th and halved the last for victory.

"Sheer luck that Kimberley (pictured left) and I are playing together. We never played together in any foursomes before I turned pro. Now a computer brings us together - and here we are in a final. What luck!"
Robertson and Borthwick were roughly level par in a match of five birdies, winning by 2 and 1 against Royal Aberdeen assistant pro Joel Hopwood and Charlie Cassie (Nigg Bay).
"We won the first two holes and never fell behind after that but we were pulled back to all square by the 10th and had to fight our way back into the lead," said Robertson.
In the handicap semi-finals, Chisholm and Bisset were five up after nine holes on their way to a 7 and 6 win over Mike Winton (Caledonian) and Jim Scott (Peterculter).
Duncan and Nelson took an early three-hole lead against Low and Murray and were still three up after 14 holes before winning on the 17th green.

Who said golf was a young man or young girl's game? Naming no names. the combined age of the four competitors in one of the day's foursomes ties added up to 287! Another competitor had his 73rd birthday today. Emphasising that you are only as old as you feel.
Spectators would be very welcome to come along to Craibstone Golf Club to watch the two finals on Friday morning.
The handicap final tees off at 9am and the scratch final at approximately 9.20am.
And when it's all over you can relax with lunch or just a cup of tea and delicious scores inside the Craibstone clubhouse at the Brimmond Bistro - which is open to members of the public every day.
