MELDRUM HOUSE MAN FIRST AMATEUR TO WIN

NICK ROBSON MAKES HISTORY ON

EUROPEAN  SENIOR OPEN TOUR

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Aberdonian Nick Robson, Meldrum House GC clubmate of Scottish amateur champion Chris Robb and Scottish senior stroke-play champion Barry Brooks, showed that he too is capable of notching a notable victory by becoming the first amateur to win on the European Senior Tour, a circuit for professionals and amateurs aged 48 and over and organised by Scot David James from Dalbeattie.
On Saturday, the day before his 53rd birthday, Nick shot a second-round, five-under-par 67 - a brilliant score in very windy conditions - for a two-round aggregate of six-under-par 138 to win the event at La Serena Club in Spain's southeast Murcia region.
To say that the Spanish pros were stunned by Robson's performance in a wind that saw very few sub-par scores - Nick was the only player to break 70 in the final round  - is an understatement.
Robson won by four strokes from two Spaniards, Jose Carriles (72-70) and Jose Romero (68-74).
Another well-known Spanish player, Miguel Angel Martin, who had cruised to victory in the warm-up tournament, opened with a solid 70. However, after noticing an error on the card, he honourably pointed out the mistake and graciously accepted the inevitable disqualification.
