OPENING WEST OF SCOTLAND LEAGUE WIN AT TROON
RENFREWSHIRE SEEK 13 IN ROW

Renfrewshire has been West of Scotland Champions for the past 12 years and the other
counties involved have vowed to prevent it happening again.
With that in mind, the team travelled to
Troon Darnley to face an Ayrshire side which wanted to prevent an away win.
Matthew Clark (Kilmacolm) led the way against Irvine’s John Shanks and won his
match with a massive drive at the 360yd 17th to 20ft to win by
2 and 1.
Not to be outdone, a resurgent Gordon
Stevenson (Whitecraigs) birdied the same hole for the same result in his match
against Craig Hamilton (Ballochmyle).
Erskine’s Ronnie Clark, the team captain,
was always in control in his battle with Irvine’s Gary Brydon, winning 3 and 2,
and clubmate Michael Daily did even better with a 5 and 4 win over Stephen
Spence (Royal Troon).
Andrew Farmer (Kilmacolm)
was back in the team and achieved the winning point against Ravenspark’s George
Robertson. Glasgow Youths’ champion Craig Pirie from
Renfrew gained his maiden victory with hard fought one hole win over Colin Gray
(Irvine).
Willie McMillan
(Bonnyton), having won the final stroke play event of the season, was not in
top form and lost 5 and 4 to Malcolm Pennycott (Whiting Bay).
Finally, Stewart
Watt (Old Ranfurly) could not withstand a late charge from Gordon Boyle, a
Turnberry member, and lost 3 and 1.
So a 6-2 away win to get the campaign started but the Glasgow team, having won its first match, is determined to halt progress when the Renfrewshire team travels to Bishopbriggs in two weeks. Renfrewshire will be missing Clark, Stevenson, Farmer and Watt so cannot be favourites.
