 CHRIS MAILLEY WINS CARNEGIE
SHIELD FOR THIRD TIME

 By ROBIN WILSON
Local plus two handicap golfer Chris Mailley served up a resilient defence of the Carnegie Shield at Royal Dornoch to raise his winning years to three. His previous triumphs were in 2009 and last year's 100th competition.
In Saturday's final, Mailley, the  local club champion, met American Andrew Biggadike, a three time winner over the past ten years, but the defending champion, with three holes left to play, was able to hold onto a narrow inward half one-hole lead  to win on the final green.

Biggadike's best spell came at the far end of the famous Dornoch links course with back to back birdies on the 8th and ninth holes to get back to level after the local member birdied the opening hole and won the fifth with par.
The American, from San Francisco’s Olympic Club but now residing and working in London with Dornoch nominated as his home club, after winning the previous two holes looked favourite to go into a one hole lead at the tenth where Mailley missed the green from the tee but then holed a width of the green putt for a saving half in par.

After almost driving the 15th green Mailley got a one hole lead back with a birdie three and over the final three holes secured the necessary halves to become one of only nine other golfers to win back to back in the 101 years of the competition.

At sixteen years of age and playing in his first Carnegie Shield Week local Junior Section captain David Stoddart, made it a memorable début by winning the E C Fraser Trophy, beating Richard Fawssett (Crowham Hurst) by one hole.
Alastair Frood of Ranfurly Castle won the low handicap section Davidson Trophy when in the final he  beat ex-Dornoch member Jonathan Aitchison (Woodhall Spa) after just 13 holes.
