Connor Syme (Drumoig), beaten by Bradley Neil in the British amateur championship semi-finals at Portrush, showed his class in scoring a first SGU 72-hole Order of Merit tournament victory at a often wet but always windswept Peterhead Links today (Sunday).
Syme, 19-year-old son of the professional who has bought and re-opened Drumoig Gofl Centre, finished with a flourish, getting an eagle 3 at the last hole to win the North-east District Open Championship by four shots.
"I always seem to play well in the North and North-east. Maybe I like playing in bad weather!" said Syme who had scores of 72, 66, 70 and 70 for a two-under-par total of 278.
"It's too early to claim that being able to practice all day long at Drumoig has made a big difference - but I've no doubt it will. No, what I would say is that I feel a lot more settled since my mother moved up from Dumfries to join us at Dundee where we are based temporarily for Drumoig."
Syme was twice a winner of the Paul Lawrie Scottish schoolboys title.
Connor went three shots clear of the field after three rounds but had three times Aberdeen Links champion Barrie Edmond (Bon Accord) snapping at his heels for a long way in the final round. Out in one-under-par 34, the 36-year-old Edmond was tied for the lead at this point, Syme having wiped out birdies at the first and third with a double bogey at the short sixth and bogeys at the fourth and eighth.
But Edmond's challenge faltered with bogeys at the ninth, 13th, 15th and 16th. He finished with a birdie for a 71 and a two-over-par total of 282.
Barrie did win the trophy which goes to the leading North-east player in the championship.
Kyle Godsman (Moray) closed with a 69 for 283 and third place.
Royal Aberdeen's Nick Macandrew, pictured left at Peterhead, finished joint 12th on 293 after being in the mix for the first three rounds. A last-round, 10-over-par 80 nullified all the good work that had gone before for the young man who beat Jamie Savage in a play-off to win the Battle Trophy at Crail earlier in the summer.
After a good opening drive in the fourth round, Nick shot himself in the foot with a ouble bogey 6 at the first, a bogey at the second, another double bogey 6 at the third .... leading up to the crushing blow of a triple bogey 8 at the eight. All of that added up to 44 shots for the front nine.  He came back on the rails with an inward 36 but it was too little, too late for Macandrew.
