TWO SCOTS IN LAST EIGHT OF SOUTH

AFRICAN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Two Scots - Scott Gibson (Southerness), pictured right,  and Daniel Young (Craigie Hill) - coped well on a day of stifling heat to win their way through to the quarter-finals of the South African amateur golf championship at Hermanus Golf Club on the Western Cape.
Gibson will meet the defending champion, Thriston Lawrence in the round of the last eight after wins by 7 and 6 over Albert Ventner and 3 and 2 over Robert Bougas, both South Africans, in the second and third rounds today (Wed).
Lawrence was pushed all the way by compatriot Tom Watson before winning at the 19th.

Young, pictured left, will play James du Preez for a place in the semi-finals. The Perth player won by 4 and 3 against Eduard van den Berg and by 5 and 4 over Werner Theart.
Du Preez beat Jamie Savage (Cawder) at the 19th in a thrilling third-round tie.
Savage had beaten Allan Lones 4 and 3 in the morning.
Connor Syme (Dumfries and Co) beat SGU National Squad team-mate and British boys champion Ewen Ferguson (Bearsden) by one hole in the second round but lost by 2 and 1 in the afternoon to Altin van der Merwe.
The 17-year-old Van der Merwe said after the match:
"Connor just hit a few bad shots and I took advantage of it. I hit some good shots and putted well – that's how I took the holes."
Van Der Merwe will take on clubmate Gerlou Roux in the quarter-finals. Roux was a  4 and 3 winner  over the leading match-play qualifier, Jovan Rebula, 16-year-old nephew of Ernie Els.
Ben Kinsley (St Andrews), who claimed the scalp of the top-ranked South African in Tuesday's first-round, lost by 3 and 2 to Jason Viljoen in the second round.
