STEPHEN GRAY GIVES £2,500 TO PGA BENEVOLENT FUND

Hayston professional Stephen Gray has donated half the proceeds of his charity pro-am to the PGA Benevolent Fund.

Gray, pictured, a former Tartan Tour No 1 and still one of the leading players on the domestic circuit , presented a cheque for £2,500 to PGA captain Neil Selwyn-Smith on the eve of the Open Championship.

Gray has organised the pro-am for the last seven years with money going to various local charities.

But he revealed he had been inspired to give something to the Benevolent Fund after hearing some of the good work that goes on in helping PGA Members.

"I've been doing this charity pro-am for six or seven years now raising money for local charities but this year I had no idea what to do with it," he said.

"I was then at another pro-am and heard about the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow so decided to give half to them but I also wanted to give half to the PGA Benevolent Fund.

"I've heard a lot of good stories about what the Benevolent Fund does to help PGA Members so was more than happy to give some money to it."

Selywn-Smith thanked Gray, adding: "This is a fantastic gesture and the money will help the PGA Benevolent Fund continue to carry out its vital work in supporting PGA Members who have falled on difficult times."
