LANGER LEADS COUPLES BY ONE AFTER THREE ROUNDS AT TURNBERRY

FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Bernhard Langer will take a one-stroke lead into the final day at Turnberry as he attempts to win a second Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex in three years.
The Florida-based German, winner of the last Senior Open to be played on Scottish soil at Carnoustie in 2010, claimed a narrow 54-hole lead over American Fred Couples after battling more testing conditions on the renowned Ailsa Course to post a four under par 66 in Saturday’s third round, as overnight leader Gary Hallberg slipped back into a tie for fourth with 18 holes to play.
With winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour at times, scoring proved difficult for many of the 76 players that made it through to the weekend play in Ayrshire, as Langer capitalised to take control at the 26th Senior Open, the seventh to be played at the Ayrshire venue.
After starting in identical fashion to his third round with a birdie at the par-4 first, the 54 year old made further birdies on the short fourth before a stunning four-hole run that saw the 42 time European Tour Champion turn in 30 blows.
Following his only bogey of the front nine at the par four fifth, Langer birdied the testing par three sixth, before holing a significant 12 foot eagle putt at the long seventh thanks to a pin-point three iron approach.
Another birdie was to come at the iconic ninth hole and despite a more up and down back nine that included two bogeys on short 11th and 15th holes, the two-time Masters Champion ensured a slim lead over Couples going into Sunday with a fifth birdie of the day at the par five 17th.
“I played a really good round of golf today with a couple of small putts missed,” said a satisfied Langer. “I drove the ball really well, putted well early, and then I missed a couple of short ones.  One was a severe lip out and another one was a misread and a push.
“Then on 15 I hit a really good shot, as well, but just with the wrong club; went in the back bunker and made bogey.  But you get that kind of stuff when you've got conditions like there were today.
“Overall the wind wasn't quite as strong as yesterday and we just had two rain showers, so it was a little bit better than the forecast had predicted.”
Langer, who held off a Corey Pavin charge to complete a wire-to-wire maiden Senior Major victory at the same event two years ago, reflected on what it would mean to capture a second Senior Open title come close of play on Sunday.
“It always means a lot to win Major Championships, win big tournaments, because you're winning against the best players on tough golf courses,” Langer continued. “This is a fantastic test of golf.
“There are a lot of guys still on the leaderboard with a chance, and I look forward to tomorrow, playing with Freddie.  We played together in the pro-am, and we've been paired together many other occasions so it should be a good day.”
Despite never having claimed an Open Championship crown over the course of a stellar career, Langer has a good record in the event and on links courses, having finished inside the top ten on eight occasions.
The 2004 Ryder Cup-winning European captain finished second at The 1981 Open at Royal St George’s and The 1984 Open at St Andrews, but it is a tied third finish at Turnberry in 1986 that retains a special place in Langer’s heart, as the Anhausen native’s first daughter Jackie was born overnight with one round to play.
He remembered: “I got a phone call that said you're a dad, so obviously it was a thrill that everything went well.  I was sad in a way that I missed the birth but made sure I was there for the next three.
“And then when I arrived Sunday morning, and it had on the leaderboard, ‘Congratulations, Bernhard, you're a dad,’ so that was pretty cool.”
Langer has looked in fine form so far this season, finishing in the top five in all three of his appearances on the European Senior Tour this season, and narrowly missed out on the US Senior Open two weeks ago when he surrendered a four shot 54 hole lead to eventual winner Roger Chapman so he will be doubly-determined to succeed in claiming the Senior version of the fabled Claret Jug on Sunday.
American Couples will take to the Ailsa Course alongside championship leader Langer at 3pm tomorrow after posting a best-of-the-day 64 with a near-flawless Saturday that featured seven birdies, including a hat-trick to close the back nine, and just the one bogey at the tough par four 14th leaving the Senior Open debutant one shot back with 18 holes to play.
“It was a very, very good day,” said Couples, who shot an impressive two under par 68 in the worst of the conditions on Friday. “Yesterday I think gave me a little confidence, and then coming out and playing today, I certainly didn't think I would shoot 64, but once I got going, I didn't miss many shots; it was a great day, a lot of fun.”
Couples ranks The Open Championship as his second favourite tournament after the Masters Tournament, which he won in 1992, having finished in the top ten on nine occasions, and he admitted he would dearly love to add the Senior version of the title to his 54 professional wins.
“I've achieved a few things, but my goal way back when was to always win here,” he continued. “It's easily been my second favourite tournament, I just feel like The Open was always a treat to play, always very demanding and took a lot of thought to play the course.
“I just had a great round on what I consider to be one of the top courses in the world.  So tomorrow someone is going to win, someone is going to win a Senior Open, and I would love to be able to beat this course for four days.”
Peter Fowler, John Jacobs Trophy winner in 2011, showed top form to sign for the only bogey-free round of the day, a five under par 65 leaving the Australian one shot back from Couples, while a three-way tie for fourth at three under par features England’s Barry Lane, America’s John Cook, and 36-hole leader Hallberg, who rallied bravely to salvage a three over par 73 with two birdies in the last four holes.

KERR AND LOMAS WINS £1,068 APIECE FOR DRUMPELLIER JOINT VICTORY

Edinburgh's Mark Kerr and Englishman Jonathan Lomas earned £1,068 apiece by tieing for victory with matching rounds of seven-under-par 64 in the rescheduled Drumpeller pro-am today.
The 18-hole event was washed out earlier this month and at times today it looked as a similar fate was in the offing.
"We were only able to finish today because of the hard work by the greenkeeping staff," said tournament director Glenn McPhee.
Kerr had an eagle, seven birdies and a double bogey at the short fifth.
Lomas, out in 31, had a bogey-free round of seven birdies.
They finished two shots clear of third-placed Stephen Gray (Hayston) who earned £712 for his 66.
David Orr (Mearns Castle Golf Academy) lead the amateur trio of Jim Forsyth (handicap 9), Alan Forsyth (5) and Bill Forsyth (8) to victory in the pro-am team event with a net score of 13-under-par 58

SCOTS OUT OF THE HUNT IN ENGLISH CHALLENGE TOUR

By Neil Ahern
Andrew McArthur and Raymond Russell are the best placed Scots going into the final day of the English Challenge but are a long way back after respective rounds of 71 and 73 left them both in tied 39th position on two under par.
McArthur’s one under par round and Russell’s one over par round at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf and Spa meant they were 13 shots off the lead set by Chris Paisley, while Jack Doherty’s two over par round of 74 left him four shots further back in tied 60th place.
Paisley, meanwhile, launched himself into pole position in the most spectacular fashion as the Englishman holed the first albatross of his life on the way to a seven under par third round of 65 to move two shots clear of Wales’ Stuart Manley.
The 26 year old’s two at the par five 16th hole came courtesy of a four iron approach from 227 yards, which rolled into the hole and contributed to a six under par back nine as he enters the final day on 15 under.

LOCAL HERO WIESBERGER WINS AUSTRIAN OPEN

FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Austrian Bernd Wiesberger sparked scenes of wild celebration after capturing the Lyoness Open powered by Greenfinity on home soil.
The 26-year-old from Vienna holed a birdie putt from 25 feet on the 18th green at Diamond Country Club to cap a sensational back nine of 30 for a 19 under par aggregate winning total.
For much of the day the €166,660 pay cheque had seemed destined to go to Denmark’s Thørbjorn Olesen, but the Dane’s challenge unravelled on the back nine, as he came home in 39 shots to fall back to fifth place.
Ultimately it was left to Thomas Levet to mount the most serious challenge, but after the Frenchman bogeyed the 17th hole, playing partner Wiesberger – whose drive bounced off a tree and back into play – opened up a two-shot lead which he extended to three with a finish befitting of his status as the home hero.
The victory, Wiesberger’s second on the European Tour following his win at the Ballantine’s Championship in South Korea in April, moved him into the top 100 of the Official World Golf Ranking and in line for a place in the field for the US PGA Championship in two weeks.
Wiesberger, who will make his World Golf Championship debut at next week’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, said: “My win in Korea was special, but that was something else. I always dreamed of having a putt to win my home Open, so for it to have happened doesn’t really feel real. It’s just an incredible feeling, I wish I could feel this good all the time.”
Levet signed for a round of 68 and a 16 under par aggregate total which was good enough to take second place alongside Ireland’s Shane Lowry, who posted a last round of 66.

RAYMOND SEEKS TO DOUBLE UP BY BECOMING ENGLISH AMATEUR CHAMPION NEXT WEEK

NEWS RELEASE FROM ENGLAND GOLF
Image Neil Raymond copyright Tom WardHaving retained the Brabazon Trophy at Walton Heath last month, Neil Raymond (Corhampton, Hampshire) will seek to complete the double with the English men's amateur championship, supported by Abacus, at Silloth-on-Solway and Seascale Golf Clubs in Cumbria next week.
Few players manage to lift both titles in the same year, but Raymond (image © Tom Ward) will attempt to join Mark Foster, the last player to achieve it, who won the English Amateur at Hunstanton in 1995 after sharing the Brabazon with current England captain Colin Edwards at Hillside.
The first two days are confined to qualifying rounds with all 288 players completing one round over each course at the end of which the leading 64 progress to the match play knockout stage at Silloth.
Raymond begins his bid at Seascale on the opening day, as will many of his international colleagues. Raymond sets off at 3.10pm while Ashley Chesters (Hawkstone Park, Shropshire) starts at 8am, Ben Loughrey (Wrag Barn, Wiltshire) and Jack Hiluta (Chelmsford, Essex) at 3pm and Ben Stow (Rushmore, Wiltshire) at 3.20pm.
Another England cap, Craig Hinton (The Oxfordshire, BB&O), current leader of the Titleist/FootJoy Order of Merit, starts at 8.20am and Garrick Porteous (Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland) alongside Raymond at 3.10pm.
Jamie Clare (Burnham and Berrow, Somerset), runner-up in the championship at Woburn last year, starts at Seascale at 9.40am, while others at the same course include Max Orrin (North Foreland, Kent), the current leader of the Titleist/FootJoy Boys Order of Merit, Greg Payne (Chobham, Surrey), Sunningdale Foursomes winner, and Darwin Salver champion Nathan Kimsey (Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire).
On day one at Silloth, fans will be cheering local hero John Longcake (Silloth-on-Solway, Cumbria), who retained the English mid-amateur championship over his home course in 2009 and is making a rare challenge for the English title.
Two more local hopes at Silloth, both from Workington, Cumbria, are Seb Crookall-Nixon, twice English under 16 champion, who is making a remarkable recovery from a road accident, and William Bowe. Crookall-Nixon starts at 1.50pm and Bowe is last out at 3.20pm.
Sam Claridge (Harpenden Common, Hertfordshire), a quarter finalist a year ago, is off at 12.40pm, while also starting at Silloth is England cap Ed Richardson (Hemsted Forest, Kent), Lincolnshire champion James Burnett (Sleaford, Lincolnshire) and boy cap Matthew Fitzpatrick (Hallamshire, Yorkshire).
A total of 317 players filed entries with the cut-off coming at 0.5 handicap.
The championship starts at 7am on Monday and culminates with the 36-hole final on Saturday, August 4.
