LOCAL HERO WIESBERGER WINS AUSTRIAN OPEN

FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Austrian Bernd Wiesberger sparked scenes of wild celebration after capturing the Lyoness Open powered by Greenfinity on home soil.
The 26-year-old from Vienna holed a birdie putt from 25 feet on the 18th green at Diamond Country Club to cap a sensational back nine of 30 for a 19 under par aggregate winning total.
For much of the day the €166,660 pay cheque had seemed destined to go to Denmark’s Thørbjorn Olesen, but the Dane’s challenge unravelled on the back nine, as he came home in 39 shots to fall back to fifth place.
Ultimately it was left to Thomas Levet to mount the most serious challenge, but after the Frenchman bogeyed the 17th hole, playing partner Wiesberger – whose drive bounced off a tree and back into play – opened up a two-shot lead which he extended to three with a finish befitting of his status as the home hero.
The victory, Wiesberger’s second on the European Tour following his win at the Ballantine’s Championship in South Korea in April, moved him into the top 100 of the Official World Golf Ranking and in line for a place in the field for the US PGA Championship in two weeks.
Wiesberger, who will make his World Golf Championship debut at next week’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, said: “My win in Korea was special, but that was something else. I always dreamed of having a putt to win my home Open, so for it to have happened doesn’t really feel real. It’s just an incredible feeling, I wish I could feel this good all the time.”
Levet signed for a round of 68 and a 16 under par aggregate total which was good enough to take second place alongside Ireland’s Shane Lowry, who posted a last round of 66.
