BALLOCHMYLE ARE AYRSHIRE CLUB CHAMPIONS

FROM THE AYRSHIRE GOLF WEBSITE
The host club Ballochmyle trio of Graeme Rowan, Craig Hamilton and William Flemint won the 2011 Ayrshire club championship title over their home course on sunday.
In glorious sunny weather, 60 of Ayrshire's best club golfers, representing 20 clubs, competed for the R.L. Crawford Trophy, with the best two scratch scores from three counting towards the team total.
Playing in the early games, Ballochmyle set an impressive total for the other team to challenge. Craig Hamilton led the way with what was to prove the best individual score of the day, carding a 2 under par 68. Graeme Rowan added a one under par 69 with William Fleming adding a useful 70 as the third score, which would be required in the event of a tie.
Irvine Ravenspark and Maybole, on 144, got closest of the early starters to the Ballochmyle total, and when the Prestwick team, who won the title two years ago and went on to national success, came in three short of the Ballochmyle score on 141, only Troon Welbeck of the remaining teams had a realistic chance of beating the hosts.
Stephen Murray, needing a three under par 67 to add to Marc Smith's 69, was two under par on the 11th tee but faltered a little on the inward half. Despite finishing with an impressive birdie four, Murray could only manage a one over par 71, which was enough to secure the runners up bearth for the Troon Welbeck side but ensured that the 2011 title would go to Ballochmyle.
The CSS for the event was 70 (+1)
Ballochmyle now go forward to represent Ayrshire in the Scottish Club Championship final at Falkirk Tryst on Sunday 25th September.

THE BIG THREE REUNITED AS MASTERS HONORARY STARTERS

FROM THE GOLFWEEK WEBSITE
Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus will have company as honorary starters at the Masters in 2012.
Billy Payne, Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters, has announced that three-time champion Gary Player will join Palmer and Nicklaus on the first tee.
“For decades, Gary Player has been the international ambassador for the game of golf,” said Payne. “His significant accomplishments at the Masters, spread over an astounding 52 appearances, have helped form many lasting memories for fans of golf around the world. As an Honorary Starter, his legacy will be rightfully celebrated alongside two of the Tournament’s other all-time greats, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus.”
Player was the Masters first international champion, winning in 1961, 1974 and 1978. He also finished in the top 10 12 times.
Player played in this first Masters in 1957, appearing in 52 tournaments (the most all-time) until announcing he would retire from the Masters in 2010.
“I am thrilled to join my friends Jack and Arnold as an honorary starter,” Player said. “Augusta National is a special place that holds many memories for me. When I won my first Green Jacket in 1961, Arnold put it on my back. In 1962, Arnold beat me in an 18-hole play-off to win his second in three years. The year after my second win in 1974, Jack became the second man at the time to ever win four Masters. I was there to put the Green Jacket on both of them. Moments like those are so special and to be able to experience those memories with friends and competitors is something I will never forget.”
The 2012 Masters is scheduled for April 2-8.

MARTIN LAIRD THINKS HE COULD REPEAT MONTY'S 1999 HOME WIN

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
By ALASDAIR REID
In its 40-year history, the Barclays Scottish Open has thrown up just one home winner, but as the event makes its first appearance at the Castle Stuart course near Inverness this week Martin Laird believes his game is getting into the kind of shape that would allow him to match Colin Montgomerie's 1999 triumph at Loch Lomond.
Laird's rise to the top of his sport went mostly unnoticed by most of his compatriots before his sensational victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational event in Orlando earlier this year thrust him into the spotlight.
That win put the 28 year-old in the front rank of Scottish sportsmen, but it has also had the effect of cranking up the expectations that surround him.
“I think more people will know me after winning there,” Laird said. “But I love coming back and playing in front of a home crowd as I only get to do it once or twice a year.
"I can go to an American tournament and go unnoticed for the whole week if I'm not playing great.
“I obviously want to come back here and play well. I don't know if that's putting more pressure on me. I put plenty of pressure and expectations on myself.”
Laird's breakthrough victory in the Arnold Palmer event was preceded by a clutch of top-10 finishes, but his form since has not been so impressive.
However, he believes time spent with his coach after the recent US Open – where he missed the cut – is now bearing fruit and he goes into this week's tournament in confident mood.
“I had a good week practising last week,” he said. “I feel like my game is coming round to what it was like at the start of the year.”
The Scottish Open has not been played on a links course since Ian Woosnam won at Carnoustie in 1996, and Laird, who has spent almost all his professional career in America after spending four years at Colorado State University, admitted that it would time for him to readjust to the more traditional style of game.
“It's challenging for me to come back,” he said. “It's not like I can come back and automatically know how to hit little bump-and-runs. It definitely takes some getting used to, but as the week goes on I'll probably get more comfortable.”

Laird to take European Tour membership

to boost Ryder Cup selection prospects

FROM THE SKYSPORTS.COM WEBSITEMartin Laird has announced he will take up membership on the European Tour next season in order to help his chances of qualifying for the 2012 Ryder Cup.
After moving to America in his teens to attend Colorado State University, Laird has spent his entire professional career based in the States.
However, the Scottish No 1 is now eager to take dual US PGA Tour and European Tour membership next season as he bids to feature in the Ryder Cup for the first time.
The 2012 match will be held Stateside at Medinah and the two-time winner of the US Tour winner is determined to make captain Jose Maria Olazabal's European team by right.

"The Ryder Cup is definitely high up on my agenda and I will be joining the European Tour next year, and play a few more European Tour events," he explained ahead of this week's Scottish Open.
"I want to make it clearly into the side, and not by just making the team from staying in America.
"I want to come back and play a few more events and hopefully be in a situation where I can play myself onto the European team.
"So I'll be joining as an affiliate member, and hopefully (playing) 13 European Tour counting events."
Meanwhile, the 28-year-old has declared himself happy to be back in Europe - not just for two huge events, but also for a break from wedding preparations.
The first Scot to make the world's top 25 since Colin Montgomerie, Laird is getting married in Colorado a fortnight after next week's Open Championship.
"Obviously that's the biggest weekend of the year!" he continued. "You only get married once - hopefully!
"We're really looking forward to that, but it's kind of nice to be over here and play a couple of really good tournaments and get away from all the wedding details."
First comes the Barclays Scottish Open, which after more than a decade at Loch Lomond switches back to a links course, the spectacular new Castle Stuart lay-out.
Given the change Laird admits he is surprised there are not more American players in the field to aid their Open preparations - Phil Mickelson, Matt Kuchar, Gary Woodland, Brandt Snedeker, Ryan Palmer and Brendan Steele being the ones who have crossed the Atlantic early.
"I got a lot of questions from guys the last few months," added Laird. "I told them I've not been here, but heard it's great.

"I don't know if it's because it's the first year maybe they didn't come.

"Links golf is so different than the typical American-style golf. If you haven't played on it for a while it does take you a little time to get used to it and get your feel back around the greens and stuff."

NICOL AND BYRNE CHEER UP SCOTLAND'S DAY AT VILAMOURA

Two very good late evening scores by Fraserburgh's Kris Nicol (four-under-par 68) and Banchory's James Byrne (70) cheered up the Scotland camp at the end of the first day of the European men's amateur team championship at Vilamoura Victoria on Portugal's Algarve.
But, even so, the Scots are in 12th place on 359. Their target must be to catch either Finland or England, sharing seventh/eighth places on 353, over the second qualifying round to make the top flight of eight for the match-play stages.
NIcol, pictured, had a bogey-free round and birdied the second, third, fifth and 15th.
Byrne looked set to break 70 until he bogeyed the very last hole.
The other Scots' scores were:
Ross Kellett (Colville Park) 71, David Law (Hazlehead) 74, Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) 76 and, the non-counting 77 by Greg Paterson (St Andrews New).
Scottish champion Stewart had 7s at the fifth and seventh in an outward 40.
Spain (338) lead from France (340) and Germany (343).
Scotland were in eighth place in the European boys team championship at Prague City.
Scots individual scores were:
Eamon Bradley two-under-par 70, Jack McDonald 71, Grant Forrest 72, Ewan Scott 75, Greig Marchbank 76, and the non-counter, Anthony Blaney 82.
Germany (350) lead from Finland (358). Scotland are on 364. England (366) are in 11th place. Ireland are on 370 and Wales are tied 15th on 372.
France's Florian Loutre had the best individual round of seven-under-par 65.

TIGER WOODS CONFIRMS HE WON'T BE FIT TO PLAY IN THE OPEN

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED
BY THE R AND A
Chief Executive of The R and A Peter Dawson has wished Tiger Woods all the best for his rehabilitation, after the three-time Open champion announced that he will not be able to contest this year’s Open Championship.
Woods is still suffering from knee and achilles problems, which have not recovered in time for him to take his place at golf’s oldest Major.
Dawson said: "I know how disappointed Tiger is not to be able to play in The Open this year. Naturally, we are sorry that a player of his calibre isn’t able to join us at Royal St George’s, but we wish him well in his recovery and hope to see him back soon, competing in front of the fans that love to see him play the game."
Woods said earlier in a statement, “Unfortunately, I've been advised that I should not play in the British Open. As I stated at the AT and T National, I am only going to come back when I'm 100 percent ready. I do not want to risk further injury. That's different for me, but I'm being smarter this time. I'm very disappointed and want to express my regrets to the British Open fans”.
Woods will be replaced by the USA’s Jason Dufner, who made his Open Championship debut at St Andrews last year, before finishing tied-fifth in the US PGA Championship, at Whistling Straits.
This follows a weekend in which another four players secured their places at The Open Championship. Denmark’s Thorbjorn Oleson and Charles Howell III of the USA earned exemptions by virtue of their performances at the Open de France and the AT and T National, respectively. Swede Fredrik Jacobson and the USA’s Harrison Frazar did the same, after finishing as the leading players, not already exempt, in a PGA Tour mini-money list.

Yesterday, Americans Webb Simpson, J B Holmes and Steve Marino, along with Fiji’s Vijay Singh and Yuta Ikeda of Japan were promoted from the reserve list, bringing the current field to 154 players, with the two last places available this weekend at the John Deere Classic and the Scottish Open.
Brendan Jones of Australia, who was the first reserve, will not be able to accept his exemption, as his wife is expecting their baby. The next three players on the reserve list, as of now, are as follows:
1 Robert Garrigus
2 Anthony Kim
3 Simon Dyson

Paul O'Hara finishes joint fifth in EPD Tour event in Germany

Paul O'Hara earned 1,040 Euros for a joint fifth place finish in the EPD (German PGA) Tour's Coburg Brose Open over 54 holes at Coburg Golf Club in Germany.
O'Hara had rounds of 72, 66 and 70 for an eight-under-par total of 208. He burst into contention with a bogey-free second round and, with a birdie at the third in his final round, was well in the mix.
The Motherwell man covered 27 holes in seven under par without a bogey until his charge lost its momentum with back to back bogeys at the 10th and 11th.
To O'Hara's credit, he picked himself up, dusted himself down and finished strongly with birdie 2s at the short 13th and 15th and a closing birdie 3 at the 18th for a two-under-finishing round.
He finished four shots behind the winner of the 5,000 Euros prize, German Sebastian Buhl who had rounds of 67,70 and 67 for 12-under-par 204.
Three other Germans tied for second place on 207.

75th CRUDEN BAY CHALLENGE CUP NEXT WEEK

FROM ROBBIE STEWART
PGA Director of Golf
Cruden Bay Golf Club
Our four-day men's open tournament next week - Tuesday to Friday - is the 75th playing for the Challenge Cup. There are still some places available for late entries by calling me on 01779 812285. The entry fee is £60 which guarantees four rounds of golf.
Below is an excerpt from our most recent members’ newsletter about this years’ event:-
75th Challenge Cup
The Challenge Cup has been in existence in one format or another for over a century, having been first played in 1901. Since that time the competition has been a prominent fixture on the north-east golfing calendar. There have been some breaks in continuity at the times of the World Wars, in the aftermath of the closure and demolition of the grand hotel in the 1950s and finally during the period of 1964 to 1977.
Among the most notable names engraved on the trophy is that of Harry Bannerman, our former club professional and Ryder Cup player who prior to leaving the amateur ranks was the winner in 1963 whilst a member at Murcar Links.
In recent years the club has had almost a monopoly on the winning front thanks in the main to Laurie Phillips and Michael Buchan. Last year Laurie became the first player to win the trophy five years in a row and in doing so became the player who has won the Challenge Cup most often with a total of six victories. Once again he will be hoping to mount a successful defence of his title but faces stiff competition from a number of contenders.
Expect to see the following players in contention - current club champion Stewart McCulloch, Hawklaw Tankard winner Mark Christie, Chris Gilbert, Sam Strachan
(Inverallochy) and the dark horses Alan Duff and Dom King. With the course in such fine condition and a top quality field all we need is good weather to ensure that we have another fascinating four day Challenge Cup.

ELDERSLIE TRIO TO REPRESENT RENFREWSHIRE

The winning Elderslie team of R McLeod, L Jenkins and A McDougall. Picture by courtesy of Don Bremner.

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE RENFREWSHIRE GOLF UNION
Whinhill Golf Club, which this year celebrates its centenary, was the venue for this year’s Renfreshire club team championship.  With the winners qualifying for the Scottish finals and the opportunity to represent Scotland at the European finals in Turkey, all the teams were keen to do well.
All three scores counted and with the sun beating down on the very tricky Whinhill lay-out, the first challenge came from last year’s champions, Gourock, with an aggregate score of 218 including a great 70 from Steven Higgins.  Their top place on the leaderboard did not last long as Cochrane Castle replaced them with a total of 217 with two players on 73 and Derek Anderson’s 71 being good enough for a temporary top place.
Elderslie was one of the last teams out and excitement mounted when first Lee Jenkins handed in a great score of 69 followed by young Alasdair McDougall who recorded an even better 68.
The spectators knew that the third player, Robbie McLeod, was not having the best of days and Lee and Alasdair had to wait to see if he could hold it together for the 79 or better which was needed to pip Cochrane Castle for the title.  Robbie did not let them down but had nothing to spare with his brave 79.

So it is the Elderslie team who are off to Falkirk Tryst for the Scottish final and, perhaps, dusting their passports off for a trip to Turkey.
LEADING FINAL TOTALS
216
Elderslie: Lee Jenkins 69, Alasdair McDougall 68, Robbie McLeod 79.
217 Cochrane Castle: Derek Anderson 71, Alex Farmer 73, Allan Kelly 73.
218 Gourock: Steven Higgins 70, Ross Campbell 74, Chris Mooney 74.

Rory McIlroy is named European Tour Golf of the Month for June

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE EUROPEAN TOUR
Rory McIlroy has been named The 2011 Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Month for June following his devastating performance at the US Open Championship.
The 22-year-old Northern Irishman’s sensational eight-shot victory at the Congressional Country Club saw him post the lowest winning score (268) in the Championship’s illustrious history by an incredible four strokes as he became the youngest winner of the season’s second Major since Bobby Jones in 1923. McIlroy, who receives an engraved alms dish and a jeroboam of Moët & Chandon champagne for winning the Golfer of the Month award, moved to third place in The 2011 Race to Dubai and is now hot on the heels of the two men ahead of him – World Number One Luke Donald and Masters Champion Charl Schwartzel.
“It is always nice to win any award for playing good golf but this Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Month has to go down as an extra special one given that I won the award due to my performance at Congressional,” said McIlroy I hope this will not be the first Golfer of the Month Award I receive after winning a Major Championship!”
In much the same way as his US Open victory left the rest of the field playing for second place, McIlroy similarly distanced himself from the other candidates despite a number of outstanding performances in June.
Alex Noren won the SAAB Wales Open; Robert Rock captured his maiden European Tour title at the BMW Italian Open as did Matthew Zions at the SAINT OMER OPEN presented by NEUFLIZE OBC; Pablo Larrazabal overcame Sergio Garcia in a play-off for the BMW International Open; Fredrik Jacobsen won the Travellers Championship on the PGA Tour; and at the Alstom Open de France where Thomas Levet claimed the title.
The judging panel – which comprises members of the Association of Golf Writers as well as commentators from radio and television – were swift to acknowledge the sheer brilliance of McIlroy’s history-making performance.
McIlroy joins an illustrious list of Race to Dubai Golfer of the Month winners in 2011, following Martin Kaymer (January), Luke Donald (February and May), Paul Lawrie (March) and Charl Schwartzel (April). McIlroy will now join his fellow award winners to be considered for The 2011 Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Year Award, which was won jointly by Graeme McDowell and Martin Kaymer in 2010.

PAUL O'HARA CLICKETY-CLICKS ON GERMAN TOUR

Paul O'Hara chalked up one of his best rounds - a bogey-free, six-under-par 66 - on the EPD (German PGA) Tour yesterday.
The Motherwell man, playing in the Coburg Brose Open, birdied the fifth, eighth, 11th, 14th, short 15th and long 16th to force himself into contention on six-under-par 138, having matched the par of 72 in the first round.
Coming right up todate, O'Hara has had an early birdie in his third round in Germany and, at seven under par overall, is right in the mix.
We'll give you a further update at the end of play today.
