NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE RENFREWSHIRE GOLF UNION
Whinhill Golf Club, which this year celebrates its centenary, was the venue for this year’s Renfreshire club team championship.  With the winners qualifying for the Scottish finals and the opportunity to represent Scotland at the European finals in Turkey, all the teams were keen to do well.
All three scores counted and with the sun beating down on the very tricky Whinhill lay-out, the first challenge came from last year’s champions, Gourock, with an aggregate score of 218 including a great 70 from Steven Higgins.  Their top place on the leaderboard did not last long as Cochrane Castle replaced them with a total of 217 with two players on 73 and Derek Anderson’s 71 being good enough for a temporary top place.
Elderslie was one of the last teams out and excitement mounted when first Lee Jenkins handed in a great score of 69 followed by young Alasdair McDougall who recorded an even better 68.
The spectators knew that the third player, Robbie McLeod, was not having the best of days and Lee and Alasdair had to wait to see if he could hold it together for the 79 or better which was needed to pip Cochrane Castle for the title.  Robbie did not let them down but had nothing to spare with his brave 79.

So it is the Elderslie team who are off to Falkirk Tryst for the Scottish final and, perhaps, dusting their passports off for a trip to Turkey.
