GARDNER TOPPLED BY 32nd QUALIFIER MacDONALD AT MONIFIETH
Top seed David Gardner (Broomieknowe) was beaten by the last of the 32 qualifiers, John W MacDonald (Cowglen) in the first round of the Scottish senior men's open amateur match-play championship at Monifieth Links today.
MacDonald now plays another member of his clan - former Walker Cup player Scott MacDonald (Dunfermline) who squeezed through at the 19th in his match against Colin Christy (Kilmacolm).
Another Walker Cup man, Sandy Pirie (Hazlehead), lost a battle of birdies against Ian Brotherston (Dumfries and County) at the 21st.
The No 2 seed, Fraser McCluskey (Royal Burgess), cleared his first hurdle, beating David Downie (Kirriemuir) on the 18th green. McCluskey now plays the No 15 qualifier, Jalil Aman (Grangemouth) who was a 4 and 3 winner over Gordon Doig (Southerness).
Two rounds will be played on Thursday, setting the scene for the semi-finals on Friday morning (9.0 and 9.15) and the final in the afternoon, teeing off at 2pm.
