FROM THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION WEBSITE
Ayrshire golfers were to the fore in the early stages of day three of the Scottish Amateur Championship at Western Gailes with a quarter of players storming through to the third round.
Barassie’s Jack McDonald, the 2009 Scottish Boys Stroke Play champion, led the way with an emphatic 8 and 6 victory over Andrew MacKay (Balmore), while Kenneth McAskill, a member of the Turnberry Staff club, earned a hard fought 2 and 1 win against Milnathort’s Thomas White.
Paul Moultrie, the 46-year-old from Royal Troon continued his impressive form in the championship with a 6 and 5 win over Malcolm Pennycott and he was joined in round three by club-mate Michael Smyth who ended Jamie Reid’s challenge with a 3 and 2 win as well as the 1989 champion Allan Thomson (Ayr Belleisle) after he battled to a one hole win over Simon Lockhart.
Scott Crichton (Aberdour), currently 7th in the SGU Order of Merit standings after winning the Cameron Corbett Vase last month, took the scalp of Scotland international Ross Kellett with an excellent 2 and 1 win but former champion David Law is through after edging out Brian Moore (Largs) to set up a third round duel with Ross Noon.
Former British Mid-Amateur Champion Andrew Farmer (Kilmacolm), also a member of the host club, advanced into the last 64 with a fine 3 and 2 win over promising youngster Jamie Savage (Cawder) and he will now face last year’s SGU Boys Order of Merit winner Conor O’Neil, a 3 and 2 winner this morning in his match with Richard Johnston (Glenbervie).
Jamie Gallacher’s campaign came to a quick end this morning as Fraserburgh’s Scotland cap Kris Nicol cruised to a 7 and 6 win and SGU Order of Merit leader James White enjoyed a 4 and 3 win against’s Musselburgh’s Cameron Marr.
The third round commenced at 12.45pm with tee-times continuing until 5.01pm. Conditions at Western Gailes remain glorious with temperatures in the 70s – why not come along and support your local players!
