PAUL SHIELDS IS SECOND WESTERN GAILES SEED TO BE KO'd

As the sun went down at Western Gailes today, so too did No 8 seed Paul Shields (Kirkhill), beaten 3 and 1 by young Kyle McClung (Wigtownshire County).

That leaves six seeds intact for the start of Wednesday's play. The only other seed to fall by the wayside was No 4 Greg Paterson (St Andrews New) on the opening day at the Ayrshire venue.

Ballumbie Castle's George Findlay had one of the longest matches of the day. His match started in the afternoon and he eventually won at the 22nd against Louis Gaughan (Bathgate).

Earlier there were mixed fortunes for last year’s two beaten semi-finalists.
Banchory’s James Byrne, who lost out to fellow North East player Jordan Findlay in a great last four battle twelve months ago, wasted no time in booking his place in the second round with a rapid fire 7 and 6 victory over Stuart Millar (Kilmarnock Barassie).
Byrne, who has recently graduated after completing a four-year stint at Arizona State University, picked up two birdies without dropping any shots to get his campaign off to a winning start and will now face Aboyne’s Ross Milne, who overcame Mark Hislop 4 and 3.
“I managed to break my duck of first round defeats last year so it’s good not to have to worry about that,” admitted Byrne. “My golf was steady and I was a couple under for my round so I’m pleased with the way I’ve started. It’s nice to get the course in such great weather although it’s not as warm as the temperatures in Arizona, which were well into the forties when I left!”
Stephen Neilson from Dunbar secured a bronze medal in East Lothian last time round but made a first round exit on the Ayrshire coast today, with a defeat at the second extra hole of his match to Glenbervie’s Fraser Moore.
Bernard Gallacher’s son Jamie is through to round two after a 19th hole win over Michael Dailly (Erskine) while Angus Carrick, the son of 1985 Scottish Amateur Champion David Carrick, enjoyed a fine 5 and 4 defeat of former Scotland cap Bryan Innes.
Eamon Bradley celebrated his call-up to the Scotland Boys’ Home international side with a comfortable 5 and 4 first round win against James Johnston and Fifer Brian Soutar produced the biggest win of the opening round with an 8 and 6 thrashing of Colin Peddie.
At the top end of the draw, the second round of matches got underway mid-afternoon and defending champion Michael Stewart was the first name through to the last 64, notching four birdies on his way to a 7 and 6 win over Scott Moffat.
The man he beat in last year’s final is out however as Fraserburgh’s Jordan Findlay’s challenge was ended by 2008 semi-finalist Gordon Yates, who secured a fine 3 and 2 win.
Kilmacolm’s Matthew Clark, Grangemouth’s Bobby Rushford and James Ross (Royal Burgess) also progressed to round three this evening.
