ANGUS BOYS' STROKE-PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP AT KIRRIEMUIR
Callum Rennie(Brechin) won the Angus county boys' stroke-play championship in perfect conditions at Kirriemuir Golf Club on Monday. One stroke behind pacesetters Connar Cook (Caird Park) and Ian Christie (Downfield) at lunchtime after a five-over-par 73, 17-year-old Callum produced the round of the day with a three-under-par 65, highlighted with a long curlng putt for a birdie at the tricky 18th.
Callum, who is the son of Brechin Golf Club professional Steven Rennie, has gained confidence from being brought into the county squad this year through our talent identification initiative and county junior convenor Alex McKay is absolutly delighted to see a new talent break through in one of our premier tournaments.
Runner-up, four strokes back, was Connar Cook (72-70) who is also having a very good season, winning lowest scratch score at the recent Montrose junior open and enjoying a good run at the Angus men's championship.
Scott Grant (Downfield) took third place with 145 (74-71).
The match-play qualifying cut fell at 157 with two boys being eliminated by their higher second rounds.
Kirriemuir golf course was presented in magnificent condition. Although not overly long at a par 68/SSS 67, it has tight fairways and small undulating greens which will test the accuracy and short game of the best.
