Paul Lawrie, 1999 Open Champion, and Doug Sanders, the nearly-man of 1970

Paul Lawrie, with a solid silver replica of The Claret Jug he won at Carnoustie in 1999, with Doug Sanders, the colourful American - he was dressed in pink today - who should have won The Open at St Andrews in 1970 but missed a 3ft putt on the 18th green and then lost an 18-hole play-off to Jack Nicklaus the following day.
When asked if he ever thought about that putt down through the years, Sanders has replied in the past: "Not really, not more than at least once every day!"
Lawrie and Sanders are pictured just after the opening ceremony at Lundin Golf Club of the R and A's biennial 6th Junior Open which will be contested by a recored field of 120 competitors, all under 16 years and most of them champions in their native countries, from 77 nations.
The tournament starts on Monday over the Lundin Links where it was blowing a gale today for the final practice round.
