HARKINS LEADS CAMERON

 CORBETT VASE FIELD AT

HALFWAY AT HAGGS CASTLE

Chris Harkins (Ayr Belleisle), pictured right by courtesy of the Ayrshire golf website, was the halfway leader in the Cameron Corbett Vase 72-hole SGU Order of Merit tournament at Haggs Castle today.
Harkins, a winner this season of the Hillhouse Cup at Royal Troon and leading Scot at halfway in the recent Scottish open amateur stroke-play at Glasgow Gailes (he finished joint 20th), had rounds of 72 and 69 for a two-round tally of three-under-par 141 – five under the combined CSS of 73 both sessions.
First-round leader Paul Ferrier (Baberton), a former Scottish boys champion who is a student at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, fell back after setting the pace with a 68. He followed that with a 75 for 143.
Harkins’ nearest challengers on 142 at Paul Shields (Kirkhill), twice beaten in the Scottish boys; final, Scott Crichton (Aberdour), who has done well on the US college circuit, James White (Lundin), a past Scottish boys champion and now a student at Stirling University) and Jamie MacKay (Kilmarnock Barassie).
The cut fell at six-over-par 150 and among the surprise eliminators were Craig Hamilton, recent winner of the Scottish mid-amateur title, and the man he beat in that final, former British amateur champion Craig Watson (East Renfrewshire).
Peter Latimer (St Andrews New), winner of last week's East of Scotland Open, was another surprise failure. He had rounds of 75 and 79 for 154.
