Everett uses his head ... but not his
driver as he wins Scottish Alliance

Caldwell professional Craig Everett used his head ... and his driver only three times in winning the Scottish Golfers’ Alliance championship with a three-under-par total of 208 over the Moray Golf Club’s Old and New Courses.
Everett, who also won the title at Scotscraig in 2002, led from start to finish, clinching his capture of The Scotsman Trophy and the £1,000 first prize with a steady closing round of 70 in drizzling rain over the par-71 Old Course.
“You can lose a lot of balls in the whins at Lossiemouth so I used a three-iron off the tee to keep the ball on the fairway each day. And it paid off. I used my driver only three times over the 54 holes,” said Everett, whose father was a British champion miler in the post-Roger Bannister days.
Starting the last round one shot ahead of Alastair Webster, Everett showed that he would win from the front himself, like his old man used to do, and he shook off the Edzell pro’s potential challenge by reaching the turn in two-under-par 33 (birdieing the second, sixth and ninth with one bogey, at the eighth, to 38 by Webster who had a double bogey 6 at the first hole and dropped others at the fifth and 12th.
Webster came back into the picture with four birdies in a row from the 14th. It should have been five on the trot because he missed for a 3 at the last from about 5ft. Not that it would have made any difference.
A par 71 left him two strokes short of catching the steady Everett, but he collected the £700 runners-up prize.Broomieknowe pro Steven Lamb finished third on 215 with a closing 71 and earned £575.
The Clydesdale Bank Quaich for the leading amateur went to host club professional’s son Kevin Thomson, a member of the greenkeeping staff, with a birdie at the first hole of a sudden death play-off against past Scotland cap Bryan Fotheringham (Forres).
They had tied in fourth place overall on 216.
Fotheringham, a former scratch and handicap Scottish Alliance winner, finished with four straight birdies for a 73 to force the play-off.
Everett’s overall victory spearheaded the West Alliance’s victory in the team event for the Mountbatten Cup. They finished two shots ahead of the North Alliance.
The other West team members were S Savage, D Roger, M McPhee, J McDonald and J Kinloch.Tom Galloway (Dunfermline), 98-year-old Alliance stalwart, made the presentations.
He went round in 110 and 106 in the first two rounds but stopped after 11 holes of his final round."It was a bit wet and I was feeling tired. I think it's the first time I've ever had a No Return in a Scottish Alliance," said Tom who confirmed that he will be 99 on May 23, 2009.
If you remember, send him a birthday card at: 27 Katrine Drive, Crosford, KY12 8XS.
Tom is a remararkably active man for his advanced years. He still drives himself around. His eyesight is good, his hearing OK and he has been invited to drive off the first ball at the Centenary celebrations next May of a club in the Manchester area.
He says he will drive himself down from Fife and back.
Next year's Scottish Golfers' Alliance championship will be played over the Gullane Nos 1 and 2 courses.
"I'll be there," said Old (but young at heart) Tom!
