Spain applies to host the 2018 Ryder Cup

Spain wants a piece of the Ryder Cup action - again.
Santiago Fisas, the Spanish Cultural & Tourism minster, said:
``Today we have applied for the 2018 Ryder Cup, a piece of news that is very important from the point of view of the economy and the repercussions it has.''
It will be Europe's turn to host the Ryder Cup match in 2018 but a decision about the venue will not be made until 2010.
Fisas said the Ryder Cup brought in $195 million for Ireland when it was played at the K Club in 2006.
Spain, with Seve Ballesteros the victorious European team captain, hosted the Ryder Cup in 1997 at Valderrama.
Fisas was not specific about which golf course Spain would be putting forward as the 2018 venue candidate although he mentioned that a 36-hole course currently under construction in the Madrid suburb of Alcala de Henares could be a possibility.
The 2010 Ryder Cup will be played at Celtic Manor and Gleneagles Hotel will host the 2014 Ryder Cup.
