Fraser McKenna plays Portuguese lad
in British boys' championship final

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE R&A
Budding Portuguese star Pedro Figueiredo and Fraser McKenna from the Balmore club, Scotland will meet in the 36-hole final of the Boys Amateur Championship at Little Aston Golf Club, Birmingham on Saturday.
Figueiredo, winner of the Portuguese Amateur and Closed Championships this season as well as the Irish Amateur title, beat Italian Cristiano Terragni 3 and 2 in the quarter-finals and Canterbury’s Levi Johnson 2 and 1 in the semi final.
McKenna had a one-hole victory over Charles Durnian in the quarters and beat Switzerland’s Victor Hanauer by the same margin in his semi-finals
Both 17, the pair have battled through seven rounds over the past five days to be the last two competitors from a field of 256 that started out with dreams of taking the prestigious title: The first pair teed off at 6.30am on Monday.
Figueiredo from the Quinta du Peru Golf Club, south of Lisbon, has one more year at school before he plans to take up a golf scholarship in America, something which McKenna also aspires to and he is hoping his showing this week will stand him in good stead.
Figueiredo was six under par when he won at the 16th in the quarter-finals and although he wasn’t as inspired in the semis he must be favourite to take the title.
McKenna from Balmore Golf Club, Glasgow, admitted to having had a ‘lousy’ year in competition back home, but although he faltered a bit at the end of his semi-final with three bogeys, he showed his fighting qualities earlier against Durnian after falling three holes behind in the early stages.
The final tees off at 8.30am Saturday morning, with the afternoon round teeing off at 1pm.
