Wood beats Paisley in 23-hole

thriller at Turnberry

FROM THE R&A CHAMPIONSHIP WEBSITE:
Chris Wood and Christopher Paisley took 23 holes to decide their second round match in the Amateur Championship at Turnberry today.
In the end it was Wood, the world number seven, who came through.
Paisley had been down for most of the morning, but battled back bravely and took the match to extra holes. After driving into a fairway bunker on the 19th he holed a 25ft putt to keep the match alive, and the players then remained neck-and-neck over the next few holes.
Only on the fifth second time round could they be separated. Wood's second fell well short of the green, but he pitched up to seven feet and holed the par putt while Paisley, safely on in two, blasted his first putt six feet past and missed the return.
Wood now faces Jorge Campillo - who beat Ireland's Gareth Shaw 3&2 - in a match which pits the two top-ranked players in the field against each other for a spot in the quarter final.
With perfect sunshine across the course and a stiffening breeze now making its presence felt, the match is sure to be a closely fought battle.
