Scot well placed for Royal Dublin last-day charge

Paul O'Hara in third place, one shot
behind Irish stroke-play leaders

Sixteen years old Pedro Figueiredo from Portugal shot a sparkling five under par 67 in the second round of the AIB sponsored Irish Amateur Open Championship at Royal Dublin and, added to his opening round of one over par 73, shares the half-way lead after 36 holes on four under par 140.
Alongside him on the four-under-par mark is England’s Mark Thistleton who was equally as impressive with a four under par 68 following his first round of level par 72.
Figueiredo birdied the par-5 second hole, but dropped a shot at the par-4 fifth hole. At the eighth, however, he holed his seven-iron second shot from 140 metres for an eagle 2 and turned in two under par 33.
He birdied the 14th, 16th and 17th for an inward nine of three under par 34.
Thistleton dropped a shot at the short fourth, but made birdies at the short seventh and par-4 eighth to turn in 34.
He added birdies at the 13th, 14th and 16th for a back nine of 34 and round of 68.
Scotland’s Paul O’Hara (Colville Park), after steady rounds of 70 and 71, is one shot off the lead on 141. He was one of six Scots to survive the halfway cut at 149 or better.
The other Scottish qualifiers were Keir McNicoll (Carnoustie) and Ross Kellett (Colville Park) on 145; Gavin Dear (Murrayshall) on 147; Wallace Booth (Comrie) and Robert Carson (Dalmahoy) on the limit mark of 149.
Reigning Irish Amateur Close Champion Shane Lowry is among a group on two under par 142. HALFWAY TOTALS
