Banchory teenager joint third in California

JAMES BYRNE A HERO FOR
ARIZONA STATE IN PAC-10
CHAMPIONSHIP VICTORY

Banchory's James Byrne played a major part in helping Arizona State University to win the Pac-10 Conference college golf team championship at Meadow Club, Fairfax in California (on Wednesday USA time).
Byrne, 19 and one of three freshmen (first-year students) in the Arizona State team, gained a decisive par at the first extra hole in a six-a-side play-off to decide the team championship after a tie with Southern California University.
Three Arizona State players parred the hole but only two Southern California players did so.
Byrne, picture by courtesy of Cal Carson Golf Agency, all rights reserved, also produced his best individual performance of his first year on the US college golf circuit. He shot 71, 72, 67 and 73 for a one-under-par total of 283 which saw him figure in a three-way tie for third place, two shots behiind leaders Creighton Honeck (Arizona) and Kevin Chappell (UCLA).
Honeck won the individual championship with a birdie at the first play-off hole.
Byrne's 67 in the third round was a significant factor in Arizona State's success. It was the only score that day under the par of 71 for the 6,686yd course.
In the fourth and final round, the Scot birdied the first, third, 15th and 16th but bogeyed the sixth, seventh, 11th, 14th, 17th and 18th for a two-over 73.
Over the 72 holes, James had two eagles, 15 birdies, one double bogey and 16 bogeys.
He was a member of the Scotland team in last summer's European men's team championship at Western Gailes.
Mark Lamb (Arizona University), like Byrne a past winner of the Scottish boys' open stroke-play championship, finished joint 32nd in a quality field of 60 players. He improved by 18 places with a four-under-par 67, the best round by anyone on the last day. Byrne scored 74, 75, 78 and 67 for 294. He birdied the 11th, 13th, 15th and 16th in a final inward half of four-under-par 32. Lamb had five birdies in all in his final round, having birdied the first.
