BATTLING GILLIES LANDS
CARNOUSTIE TOP PRIZE
WITH ONE OVER PAR 71

Colin Gillies (Kingsfield) battled through the wind and rain at Carnoustie to win the £1,293 top individual pro prize in the £8,000 Scottish and Southern Energy pro-am today.
The Scottish PGA used a shorter par-70 course, which was just as well in view of the horrible weather.
Gillies, picture right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, all rights reserved, stole a march on his rivals by reaching the turn in 34 (two under par) with birdies at the third, eighth and ninth and only one shot dropped, at the fifth.
But it was a survival of the fittest into the wind coming home.
Colin dropped shots at the 13th, 14th, 16th and 17th and, in the final analysis, it was his lone birdie after the turn, at the 15th, which landed him an outright victory.
He won by one shot from Russell Smith (Gleneagles Hotel) and Euan Cameron (Hamilton).
Andrew Marshall (Houston Golf Range) led the Airtricity Renewables amateur trio of Mark Fogarty (handicap 13), Philip Soden (7) and Stephen Wheeler (18) to victory in the two-scores-to-count team event with a total of four-under-par 136.
