Super 67 by Banchory teenager in California
PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIP
Banchory's James Byrne, a first-year student at Arizona State University, has had his best competitive round of golf since he left Scotland for the States last autumn.
Byrne, 19, pictured right, a full Scotland cap, shot a four-under-par 67 in the third round of the Pac-10 men's college championship at the 6,686yd Meadow Club course at Fairfax, California.
He was the only player in the quality field to break par and he did it with a superb inward half of 31, birdieing the 10th, 12th, 13th, 15th and 16th.
He had earlier birdied the first but dropped shots at the sixth and ninth in an outward 36.
That super score propelled Byrne up among the leaders to joint second place on three-under-210 with one round to go. He is one of five players only one shot behind leader Kevin Chappell (UCLA).
Mark Lamb from Haddington, like Byrne a former winner of the Scottish boys' open stroke-play championship and now a student at Arizona University, is back in joint 50th place on 227 after rounds of 74, 75 and 78. He had a double bogey in his first round and again in the second.
